At bedtime I become like Adrian Monk (Obsessive-Compulsive)
So, doc...

I have this problem, where I can't decide whether to sleep with a blanket on top of my comforter or not. If it's on I feel comfortable for a minute or two and then I start to feel like I'm suffocating. If I take it off I become afraid because my body or feet start to feel so cold and exposed, even though they're not really cold, I just imagine they are becoming that way. So the blanket goes back on. This can go on for a couple hours sometimes. Really, I used to laugh at it, but I'm tired of losing sleep over this BS. I feel like a wacko! And I'm tired in the morning. Can anyone give me some advice on how to deal with this neurosis, psychosis, whatever it is? Any shrinks here? I'm not ready to pay for advice but I'll do anything you tell me! Thank you.

1. My daughter has OCD
it's no fun. And I really can't tell you what to do to stop obsessing. However, I find that a light, woven cotton blanket between the sheet and the comforter is just right for me and I keep my room fairly cold. I also wear socks to be because my feet get cold. And before you ask, yes, I sleep alone, so I don't have to impress anyone with how un-sexy it is to wear socks to bed!

2. I was hoping someone would blame it on my mother, or a school bully
when I was 10, or lack of sex or something.:-) I never thought of myself as having OCD, this is the only manifestation of it, though I tend toward perfectionism in daily life. I want someone to put me on a metaphorical couch and dig into my psyche here! :-)

if I were to tell you it was your mother's fault, then it would be MY fault my daughter has it....
Actually, according to my daughter's counselor, it is an anxiety disorder and can have an organic component. My daughter's father has mild OCD as well.
It can be treated with drugs and behavior modification. It can manifest itself in only one way, as well. Try the socks, or the electric blanket and if you still obsess, you really may need to speak with someone about it.

on edit: not all cases of OCD are like Monk's. My daughter's obession centers around me and her thinking I have germs. She does not do this with anyone else, not at school, in stores, etc. I thought she was full of crap for years and just trying to yank my chain. The counselor wised me up. It can be just one thing that you can't clear out of your mind.

3. Sounds like you
like the warmth of the extra blanket, but not the weight of it.

A down comforter is warm, but not very heavy. Or perhaps an electric blanket.

4. its not
OCD. I do the same thing. Solution find a light blanket and keep it on. Or put on plaid pajamas and sleep on top of the covers.

To hold me still when I start doing the blanket-on, blanket off thing. :)

8. Try staying up 72 hours straight...

and blanket manipulation will be the least of your problems.

By the way, I love that show "Monk". Isn't it on anymore? Maybe I'm just not paying attention,

9. Do I Suffer From OCD? -- Before bed, I only check the locks once... but
it must be *I* who does the checking. I'm not satisfied simply hearing someone confirm "yeah, it's locked"... I must see for myself that it's actually locked to my satisfaction.

Maybe it's just our neighborhood... I wasn't this bad before I moved here.

11. I Can't Do That. I Even Have Hotel-Style "Flip Locks" On My Bedroom Doors.
I don't know why it is that I feel so vulnerable when I'm sleeping. I'm certain that my ex has given up on the idea of killing me long ago. But the packs of youths that wander the neighborhood cause me worry (except when the snow is up to their ass, then they tend to stay inside).
