Update: My Kitty Thomas is Making Remarkable Progress
Last night Thomas had to be taken to the emergency vet for a urinary blockage. His blood work was dismal and his prognosis not much better.

Today, his blood work is almost normal (his BUN is still high, but down from 230 to 50; normal is 36 and under). He had hemorrhagic cystitis, which is like a severe bladder infection, but there are no crystals in his urine. which is very good. He's feeling well enough to try to hide (he's very shy) and the staff has made him a little hidey-hole. Everytime I call, they all tell me how sweet and beautiful he is, so he must be behaving well!

I get to ram myself deeper into debt and bring home my big sweetie pie cat in about three hours. I can't afford how much this is going to cost, and I couldn't care less because my kitty is going to be okay.

Many many thanks to all who sent good thoughts - last night it didn't look as though he was going to make it, and now he's remarkably much better, and I know all your kind thoughts helped him a lot.

1. I am glad the cat is better. I once had a cat with that trouble
Well a few times with cats but one thing the vet said was no dry food as their is ash in it. I am not sure that is true now but at the time I did as vet said and have never gone back to dry food. Two of the three cats that had this lived to be very old cats but the other got out and we could not find him until it was to late so just had to put him down. One was at vets for weeks to get him to pee right and the vet said the darn cat just keeps purring and does not know he is at deaths door, but he did get better and lived to about 18.The other lived a very long life also. So all my be OK.

2. Yay!
Glad to hear he is doing better. Those vet bills are so costly, I say Universal Health Care for cats! (and people). (Oh, ok and dogs, too.)

8. Symptoms of urinary blockage
include straining to urinate and drops of bloody urine. My late kitty Fergus had FUS for years (but died of old age at the age of 19). When cats (usually males) have this, you'll see them straining to go anywhere because they're so desperate to go; they'll even try on your couch, completely ignoring their litter box training. Sometimes when they do manage to squeeze out a few drops the urine will have blood in it.

This is a serious condition and needs to be managed NOW. If anyone has a cat who's exhibiting this behavior, get kitty to the vet today, because they can become toxic and die in a few days.

As for the food, I was told feeding cats higher quality foods such as Science Diet and the prescription "CD/RD..." foods from the vet's office will help this. They're more expensive, but isn't your cat worth it?

Good luck with Thomas (and to the other poster who said his/her kitty is sick now).

7. Go Thomas!
It's amazing how animals can bounce back so quick. Maybe all the good vibes sent your way with your earlier post helped!

10. Don't you just love bringing your kitty home?
I've had similar experiences with my cats and veterinary bills, but it's worth it when you get to take them home and they're feeling better. He'll probably pile into his food as soon as he sees it.
