My cat's dead :-(
I was sitting in my room and my boyfriend heard something outside and jokingly said "I think some dogs have your cat". Although it wasn't serious because the dogs we've had around here have been friendly to the cat, it turned out to be true when I walked outside. Two large dogs, one light colored pitbull and one black dog (I didn't get a good look to see what kind of dog) had my cat in their mouths. It was quiet, no growling and the cat didn't make a peep. I think they may have snapped her neck quickly, so I am hoping she didn't suffer. :-( I ran out the door and yelled at them and to my dad who met me at the door and ran over with my boyfriend who was chasing the dogs off. Poor thing was dead when they dropped her.

Animal control is supposedly going to be notified tonight and come out at some point in time. :eyes:

We are hoping they don't kill any other helpless animal or attack a person or child in the mean time... they ran off and we can't find them. I know they are dogs and they probably weren't taught any better, but people should keep their dogs from running free. I don't blame the dogs, I blame the owners.

*sigh*

I wish I had a picture of her, but I don't.

RIP Boo Kitty! You didn't deserve to die like that.

1. I am so sorry
Some dogs went after my cat once and fortunately, she came out of it okay. The dogs got put down because it wasn't the first time they went after someone's pet. I felt bad but the owners had no intention of controlling their dogs and they could have just as easily gone after a child as a small animal.

2. Thanks blogslut.
Our fear is that the dogs will go after a child. After we chased them off, the pitbull came running back about 10 minutes later right at us until we yelled at him. The first time we had to chase him off with a bat. He wasn't vicious to us, pretty friendly it seemed, but I don't want it going after a child or another person's cat.

I'm glad that your cat came out okay. I hope she lives a long, happy, and healthy life!

73. We had a husky come into our yard once
and he ripped the meshing off our rabbit hutch to get to the rabbit and killed it. I was so pissed I put signs around the neighborhood warning people about this husky. (Who was allowed to roam the neighbor hood like a cat) The owner finally showed up, a little pissed about my advertisements, when I showed her what happened she knew it was her dog that did it and started crying.SHe promptly moved, with the husky in tow, of course..

21. I'm not going to hijack this thread ...

But I am going to say this.

Yes, a lot of bad things can happen.

A lot of bad things can happen to a lot of living beings in various situations.

Now, I'm going to ask you something provocative. If you, this very day, were to watch your mother/father/child whom you loved with all your heart die from lung cancer, just how open would you be to a lecture on the evils of smoking?

If that's the first thing you want to talk about, you have no empathy.

And that's all I have to say.

I apologize to pinstikfartherin for the thread having taken this path.

52. The cat was in my front yard! Five feet from my door.
She could have been on a runner or leash to keep her from roaming as I've seen other cats, but it wouldn't have mattered. She couldn't have even ran if that had been the case. The dogs came onto my property, she didn't go onto theirs. We can't even find where the dogs even came from.

51. I see your point..
but we live in a little loop next to my grandparents. The cat stayed on either our property or my grandmother's or was inside (which was most of the time). She was killed five feet from my front door for god's sake. She was very old and stayed at home. We know our neighbors and the dogs weren't from right near here. If my cat had gone into their territory, it would be a different story IMO. Hell, the cat could have been on a runner or a leash in the yard and the dogs could have done the same thing.

Anyway, I do see your point, but the cat was on my property and those dogs came from god only knows where. My fear is that those dogs will do the same to another cat or small dog or even a child.

Boo Kitty didn't deserve to die like that.

Dogs and cats should not be allowed to roam free like that. My dog (RIP) killed cats when they came in my yard. I was being responsible by keeping him contained. But other people let their cats roam free, and when they came into my backyard, they didn't usually survive it. It killed my heart for those kitties. But what was I to do. My dog was acting on instinct.

I am really sorry. I wish pet owners would be more responsible.

On edit: I will say that there was a time when my Hutch escaped. I just hope that he did no damage when he did.

53. Hi Shell..
It certainly wasn't your fault that they came into your yard. I wouldn't have been so angry if my cat had gone into someone else's yard. That would have been my fault. But the cat loved to be outside, stayed on our property or my grandmother's or was inside. She was so old, but she did get to live a long life. It comes down to the owner's responsibility and I do take part of the blame, but it's hard when an animal comes onto your property to not be more angry at someone else.

I know sometimes dogs do get out. We've had dogs get out, but luckily we caught them quickly and no harm was done. My mom taught her shelties to stay in the yard. They wouldn't even come from the gate if called unless you took them out. But sometimes things do happen. I could be angrier if we had seen these dogs many times roaming, but we haven't. Hopefully their owners have them back at home and have fixed the problem that allowed them to roam.

she didn't deserve to die like that, but as you said, I hope it was quick. That happened to one of my sister's cats - she'd just let him out into their little side area at the apartment for some sun, and a dog just ran over, grabbed him and shook once. It was over. My sister was devastated, but it was quick, at least.

It's a CT thing.... I am very saddened by your loss and my babies are getting extra hugs tonight.

Losing a pet to violence is always tragic hopefully your heart will mend and a new four legged furball that needs a new family will join your life.

As for the dogs leaving a pit bull out is like leaving a loaded shotgun on your car hood while kids are playing. The owner needs to be tracked down and charged for endangering the public.

and for Boo Kitty's tragic end. Hopefully it was very quick and painless.

It was in no way your fault, so please do not blame yourself. We always do our best to strike a balance between mental health and physical safety, and that means sometimes taking some risks.

The dog's owners were totally at fault. I know of no place where dogs are legally permitted to roam free off their own property without being attended by and under the control of their person.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I know what you mean about your sadness of not having pictures of your kitty. That does mean a lot, or at least it has to me.

If you need good support, there is a fantastic website that has helped me so much during times like this called "Rainbow Bridge." There is a chat room there and tons of support.

I can also rec some books and other things.

You are in my thoughts.

63. I am so sorry.
And for those who say it happened because of a pit bull dog, it is not the breed that is dangerous, it is the lack of training and control by the owners.

We've had stray pit bulls, Rotweillers and numerous other breeds show up on our farm. Most would chase our cats or the horses. The horses are very good at going after strange dogs - one horse literally took a chunk out of a dog and another almost crushed a dog's skull. We used to have a cat that made a bloody mess out of a pit bull without getting a scratch himself. The only dogs we've had that I was worried would actually kill the cats and were agressive towards people are the Labradoodles the currently live next door.

Those mutts have threatened me and my 6'2" husband. They tried to attack our elderly cat and when I tried to chase them off they threatened me until I picked up a hoe and almost brained one of them. The owners are completely irresponsible and do not keep the dogs contained. My horses and my cats are in their own territory - the dogs are invading our space. In fact, the dogs are ranging over a quarter of a mile away from their yard.

The owners have been told more than once that I will shoot their dogs if they continue to come over. Since the cat was attacked and the dogs tried to attack me, my .22 is loaded. Animal Control has bee cut back so much they can only respond to actual attacks on humans so I cannot count on them for help.

I like dogs. I do not want to shoot someone's pet. But I do not want my cats attacked and I do not want to be attacked myself.

70. I certainly do not blame the breed.
I could have been any breed. It is the owners who were irresponsible. My dad has his .22 loaded in case they come back. I really do not believe two wrongs make a right, but I am scared of the dogs attacking a child. I don't want to see the dogs get shot, but if they go to attack one of our small dogs, another cat, or a child I would not hesitate. They really should be controlled by their owners. Period. If the owners cannot control them, they need to be taken away. I hope it does not come to that for you, but I would understand if it did. You have to protect yourself and your own critters.

74. The problem I have is that even after contacting the owners several times the dogs still are free
And are still threatening my animals and me. If you cannot locate the owners, the only defense you have for your pets and your family is to shoot the dogs.

Originally I planned to buy a paintball gun and bright pink paintballs. I figured if I shot the dogs with those and the dogs went home with pink paint splashed all over them, the owners would get the message that the dogs were where they shouldn't be. But the local paintball seller advised me NOT to do that. He told me that in his experience the paintball does not hit hard enough to discourage dogs and causes them just enough pain to piss them off and possibly anger them enough that they would attack the shooter. He was even worried that a .22 revolver would not do enough damage to the dogs if they were aggressive enough.

I just do not want to buy the ammo for my hubby's great-grandfather's bear gun and I am not sure if I can handle that size gun. I am not sure of the caliber but it is a .40 or .44 if I remember correctly. So my .22 that I know I can handle will just have to do. I hope the 9 rounds it holds would be enough if the dogs decide to get aggressive again.

64. My condolences...been through it twice.
I had two wonderful cats that both lived to the ripe old age of 15, and...sadly...I lost one, and the other a few months later.

A few months later I went to the Humane Society and adopted the cat I have now. She's 9 years old now (I adopted her when she was only two and a half months old), and an "exclusively indoor" cat (like my others).

75. *** UPDATE ***
We found out where the dogs live. They are in an area a couple streets over from ours, their backyard is close to the field beside our house where they ran off to. One of our neighbors saw the two dogs fighting with one another in the yard today. When he saw the owner, he yelled out to him that they are going to kill one another one day. The man of course said they wouldn't. Our neighbor then said that he thinks those two dogs are the ones who killed our cat. The man said nah, they hadn't gotten out in a long time. :eyes: It is those two damn dogs and now they are keeping them inside except for a few minutes at a time. Our neighbor heard the man's wife telling him that we know it was their dogs.

With the way they were acting to one another, it makes me wonder if they are training them to fight or something.

76. well as much as i hate to say it
if that pit bull has in any way been taught any kind of anger or violence whatsoever, the poor thing would probably lash out anything that made it the slightest angry...

im afraid ur poor kitty mite have been in the wrong place at the wrong time around two dogs who like to have spats with each other...

im a big believer in dogs only act as their owners teach, but poor pit bulls are a lil more prone to doing these things...
my friend once owned a pit bull, he was definitely never mean or even very rough with the poor thing ... one day we took it out to a farm with us(we had somebody ask if we wanted to make some extra money cutting some wood)... the dog ran off for about..gosh i dunno 10 minutes or something? we called and called for him and he didnt come... so we went hunting for him.

to our complete shock and dismay we found him a field over , latched jaw tight to a sheep! a freakin' sheep! we hadta smack the dog until he let go because we woulda only hurt the poor sheep more by trying to pull.

it was the most horrific thing ive seen in real life involving a dog. ive seen dogs be angry before, but never that vicious.

88. It seems like a young dog...
since it is showing aggression so young, it is a bit scary to think what it may do when it is older and bigger.

Poor kitty was in the wrong place at the wrong time. So sad it had to be in our yard though.

77. "people should keep their dogs from running free" People should also...
keep their cats inside where they are safe, and won't become kitty frisbees in the road or kill songbirds or drink antiifreeze or any of the other gazillion things that will kill them dead!

If your area has a leash law, I hope animal control gets those animals.
