Has a famous celebrity ever died and you had NO IDEA who they were???
I remember when Stevie Ray Vaughn died... I had never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I also had never heard of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez before she died... scratch that, I never heard of her till the movie came out...

I am saddened by Natasha Richardson's death... It seems particularly cruel that Liam Neeson whom I have always admired will now face every St Patricks Day with a veil of loss and Vanessa Redgrave whom I have also always admired is suffering what no mother should have to...

But I can't be the only person who simply can't place this actress. I looked up her IMDB page and while I had seen a few of her films I have no idea who she is even after seeing her picture.

Again I grieve for the loss of a wife a daughter a mother... but I also grieve for those others that are not famous who die too young... And I find it amazing that everyone knew who she was besides me.

3. Yeah, but I knew who each of those three were.
I lived in Dallas when SRV died, and in Austin when Selena died, so they were big in the places I lived. I knew Richardson more by name than by role, but I liked her in "The Parent Trap," which I watched with my kids.

There are rockers or actors who die and I have no idea who they were. Sometimes I learn who they were, if enough people seem moved by them. Other times I don't. No reason to invite grief--we've all got as much as we can handle lined up down the road as it is. On the other hand, I'm not going to belittle someone's pain or depression just because they weren't important to me.

was in a movie I saw a many years ago about the Holocaust. Something about singing to stay alive. I wish I could remember the name of it. I've never forgotten it, and it was a very touching, yet heartbreaking movie.

40. I actually knew who Selena was from channel-surfing on Saturday nights
shows how exciting my social life was at the time.

Sabrado Gigante, I think the show is, on KMEX in Los Angeles, though it originates in Mexico City.

All in Spanish, which I don't speak.

I saw her perform and thought: Gorgeous, major voice, and killer stage presence and charisma, that transmitted without being able to understand the words.

24. Liam Neeson has a rich film history. I didn't know they were married.
Her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, has a rich history too. It's such a freak accident and so very sad.

But, so do many other regular everyday people endure such tragedies. And they never get any notice. Not that they'd want it. Nor does it take away from the famous ones.

How incredibly sad.

30. Agreed. But sometimes I wonder what it must be like to have your personal tragedy
splashed all over the news like that. I wonder what it must be like to know that, everywhere you go, almost everyone knows your sad news. On one hand, the outpouring of sympathy must be wonderful. But on the other hand it must be very difficult to have photogs in your face when you just want to be left alone to grieve, and to see images of yourself walking in and out of the hospital on the news and in the papers.

My dad died December 13th, 10 years ago. That Christmas, my husband and I were driving out to the burbs to celebrate with his side of the family. I knew that everyone on my husband's side would've heard that my dad died but may not have known all the details. As we drove, I remember not being able to decide which would be worse: being forced to retell the story over and over to each family member who asked, or having them ignore the topic in an effort to spare my feelings. Knowing I was going into a room where 30 people knew what was going on (but weren't directly involved) was very hard. Imagine that multiplied by thousands. :(

Not anything against her music, because apparently she was quite talented, but I honestly never heard of her before she died. But she was huge, huge, huge in the Cuban community here in South Florida. All of Little Havana was literally in mourning. 200,000 people went to her funeral. And I never heard of her in my life before that.

I had heard of the band, but doubt I have ever heard them play, at least not enough to recognise their music, and I had no idea who he was.

I was more familiar with Ms Richardson's husband and her mother - I don't recall seeing her performances.

Seems like avery sad way to go, and my understanding is they are very great family people, and that is sad.

He died on my 8th birthday. At the time, I'd heard the name, but never really knew the music or what he did. Of course, that fall, every kid at school had an "Elvis-- The King Forever" t-shirt, so pretty soon everybody knew who he was.

(Better yet-- it was usually the Vegas-era Elvis that was on the t-shirts-- not the rebel 1950s Elvis).
