favorite dog story???
Here's one my former husband told a lot.

One day when he was in jungir high school, he saw several adult dogs really fighting, whatever you might imagine in a big dog fight.

Right as things were really going strong, here came a puppy into the fight.

The fight immediately stopped, and one of the adult dogs cuffed the puppy hard - away from the fight.

The puppy left, the adult dogs continued to fight.

Do you have a story?

1. yeah, my dane bit a soccer ball, punctured it and got his mouth stuck...
on it. What a sight. I was a kid and could not stop him from thrashing. Somehow, we got him to a vet. There was no way we could get it off otherwise.

2. I read this story as a kid
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 05:58 PM by pagerbear
A man had a faithful dog who met him every day at the bus stop as he came home from work. Every day, like clockwork, the dog could be counted on to go to the bus stop and wait patiently. One day the man was killed in a work accident. The dog waited for the man at the bus stop that day and hours later went home, dejected. The next day he waited, too, and didn't understand why the man didn't come home. He waited the next day, too, and the next, and the next. The dog waited every day for the rest of his life for the man to come home, and always went home disappointed. After years of waiting faithfully, the man's community honored the dog for his fidelity with a medal and a ceremony.

I can't tell it nearly as well as the story I read, but just writing this synopsis brings back the same tearful feelings I had when I first read the story as a child!

4. That story is about a real dog -- Shep -- who lived in Ft. Benton, Montana
There is a statue of him right near the river. Very moving story.

5. LOL that story comes from england, ireland or scotland as well!
The dog that visits his master's grave every day, or who visits the pub every day, after his master has passed.

6. This one will break your heart...

Supposedly a true story that I read in a book about dogs, that took place in Europe.

A man was sick of caring for his mother's large dog that was left with him when his mother passed away. So one day he took the dog out to a lake, put the dog into a rowboat, rowed a little bit offshore and tossed the dog overboard, hoping it would drown quickly.

The dog, knowing only love and loyalty for the person who cared for it, didn't understand and kept swimming back towards the boat, trying to climb in. The man would lean out of the boat and shove at the dog in the water, but the dog kept whining and trying to come back in the boat with him. Finally, he attempted to shove the dog's head underwater and in doing so leaned way too far, tipped the boat, and fell overboard. He could not swim and began to frantically scream for help. That's when the dog gently grabbed him by the collar and paddled him back to shore.

7. Yes, about our old golden retriever
She had a 'gang' of other female dogs who would wait at the screen door and bark for her to be let out. What dastardly deeds they did under cover of night will never be known.

11. This is about my brother's dog.
When he first got married, he gave a dog to his wife. They named him Jack. After a few years they had a son, Nick. Nick & Jack were the best of friends, practically grew up together. Unfortunately, Jack had some problems with his kidneys and he died when Nick was about five.

For his sixth birthday, my brother asked Nick if it was ok if they got a puppy. Nick said ok, and they visited a friend who's dog had just given birth. When they picked one from the litter, my brother asked Nick what he thought, and Nick said "Well, there's a chance that he'll be as good a dog as Jack."

So that's what they named him. Chance.

12. Our dog many years ago
Back in the early seventies, some friends of mine purchased a hunting rifle in San Antonio. While driving home to Ingleside, they stopped along the highway and walked down to a river bank to try out the gun. They found a mama dog with five small pups. The mama dog was suffering so bad from malnutrition that she could no longer walk on her back legs, but the pups were fine. Apparently, someone had dumped her, pregnant. They put all of them in the car and brought them home, thinking they would nurse everyone to health and when the pups were weaned, they would either give them away and take the remainder and the mama dog to the pound. Well, I knew that no one would adopt the mama dog. She quickly regained her strength (a collie mix)and I took her. My children were small and named her Poochie Dog. She was claustrophobic and would not come in the house. Back then, there were no leash ordinances in our town. We didn't have sidewalks and she would lay in the middle of the intersection by our house while my girls learned to ride their bicycles. They walked no where without her by their side. No other dogs were allowed to approach them. She would walk to the library with them and wait outside the door and walk them home. She was never hostile to other humans, never had to be, but she was very protective of other animals approaching them. She was so full of love. This thread has made me miss her very much. I love my current animals and they, too, have their own stories. They are still with me and I'm sure I'll reflect on them when they are gone, too.
