In honor of SOteric - Brussels Sprouts ala Rabrrrrrr
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 07:06 PM by Rabrrrrrr
:P

I know you don't like 'em, and I'm not a big fan either, but a friend of mine told me a great way to make them, and then I modified the recipe.

Standard recipe is to cut up a bunch of sprouts then fry for about two minutes in olive oil and butter, add some salt. After two minutes, put in a TBSP or so of water, steam the mess for 30 seconds, then squeeze half a lime over the entire deal, mix, and serve.

My alteration is to use duck fat instead of olive oil, and this time I sauted mushrooms first in the duck fat/butter mix before adding the sprouts.

Here they are cooking:

And here they are on a plate with the duck breasts:

ON EDIT: Okay, the server on which my domain is hosted is totally out of space, so until the person in charge cleans something up, I can't upload these images. Sorry folks!

1. yours sounds good--here's mine, too
cut those little fellers in half and put them in the pan with some olive oil infused with garlic......once they get a nice glaze, throw the water in to steam.

Also want to try roasting them in the oven sometime.

3. I bet that would be good and tasty, too!
I bet they'd be especially good roasted, as halves in the oven with a nice layer of olive oil and sea salt on 'em. Or maybe some bacon involved there, too...

6. Okay, I must be weird.
I like mine plain. Steamed with a little salt, no butter.

7. They are good that way, too
I grew up hating brussels sprouts. Absolutely hating them.

But when I was in college and out of the house, I realized why I hated so many vegetables: my mother boiled every vegetable we ate for a good ten minutes or more. When I discovered steamed veggies, I came to loev them! Such taste! Such wonderment!!

And the first steamed brussels sprout I had was SO different - because while most vegetables just lose flavor and get soft when boiled, brussels sprouts become little atomic bombs of disgusting rot. So even after discovering steaming, I never tried brussels sprouts since they were so TOTALLY godawful before.

I think I was 32 when my partner, after cajoling me for ages to let her, finally steamed some which I ate (she loves 'em, and was disgusted that I never let her cook them). "Hey - these are pretty good," I said.

They arne't my favorite - that goes to asparagus and peas and corn - but I don't shy away from them any more, and the ones we've gotten in the supermarket for the last month or so have been really good.
