thanks to working with mapping as my job, my own question would have been: What projection? ;)

Either it's UTM, WGS84, NAD83 or even NAD27. Then you have your State Planes, assuming you're still in the US. If not, you have projections for each country, as I've discovered for Africa. This is all very important because the difference alone between NAD27 and NAD83 can be tens of miles, or more if you are using the State Plane of Minnesota for the NAD27 and Montana State Plane-West for the NAD83 :P

In case you're interested

NAD = North American Datum
UTM = Universal Transverse Mercator
WGS = World Geodetic System

We haven't really gotten into the last one at work yet, so it's almost always either NAD83 for onshore, NAD27 for offshore and UTM for certain clients.

I wonder if there's a DEM of Washington, D.C. ...
