Progressive rock thread
Recommend some progressive rock. A link to some music would be cool, too. Dream Theater's latest album Systematic Chaos is good from start to finish. Here's a link to "The Dark Eternal Night" one of the heavier tunes on the album. I heard it first on satellite radio a few months ago although the copyright date is 2007. Don't know what's up with that.

Yeah, it's 9 minutes long. What did you expect in a prog rock thread? :D

1. Progressive rock is an oxymoron
Just a bunch of self-indulgent noodlers that don't know a damn thing about rocking

13. I dare you to listen to Porcupine Tree's "Fear Of A Blank Planet" album and still hold that opinion.
That's all I'm saying. :)

4. While I generally can't stand prog as a rule, The Mars Volta are pretty kickass.

5. I liked the Mars Volta that I have heard. I have also become quite fond of Tool
Their videos are kind of unusual but I really like their music. Here's Parabola:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiV_ue-PbL4

Parabola

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Alive, I

In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.

Twirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. we are eternal.
all this pain is an illusion

This guy is a genius. This is 2-3 years after Hello It's Me and I Saw the Light. Pre-Rush. On the North American continent. 1974.

Still mind blowing, IMO.

Hope you enjoy Droopy, others.

14. Well, EARLY Utopia, anyway.
Don't get me wrong, later Utopia is some of the greatest power pop ever created in the history of man, but if we're talking progressive, one must clarify between the two portions of Utopia's life span.

15. Fer sure....
Nice to see you round!

:hi:

But truly, isn't the sheer range of genius and output from 72-78 dazzling?

Soul medley, this, The Wheel, Can we Still be Friends, Treatise on Cosmic Fire, Heavy Metal Kids, A Dream Goes on, Real Man,
Wouldn't Have Made any Difference, Love of the Common Man, Something's Coming/Mr. T., etc. Staggering....

It's just been a variation on the themes since then.

Sincerely,
