One of my past-times is doing the sample tests at medical school websites. Perverse as it sounds, it keeps me distracted and occupied when I get restless. Usually I can find out what the answer is by a little bit of research or Google, but this one puzzled me, and it was not on line but on a radio program, but I didn't hear the diagnosis.
1. A fifty-something female who had suffered a pulmonary embolism a year ago. 2. Since then has been on blood thinning medication (Warfarin? Heparin?) 3. Recently fell and received an injury of some kind 4. Doctor was worried it might "go into the blood" and put her on oral antibiotics (?) This sounded strange to me, but this is what she explained to the doc.
5. Oral antibiotics failed and she is currently being given a series of IV antibiotic infusions.
That is all I heard or recall of her situation.
That is the set up for the hypothetical situation, and I can't find out what the answer is. What is wrong with her?
Is this sepsis or septicemia, or something like that?
Is it a serious condition?
Is the prognosis for this patient good, ambiguous, or poor?
Thanks for indulging my fascination with these medical questions, which keep my brain active, I suppose. Some people do crossword puzzles, I look for medical questions.
ON EDIT:
I don't know if this is relevant or not but she said she was obese. Non smoker.
