LTMom is 80 today 3/31/2009

Her name is Martha. She was born March 31, 1929 (nice timing, huh?) in rural north Alabama.
She married my father, a decorated WWII vet, in 1946. Together, they produced 3 boys, I being the youngest.
My father died in November, 1955 when I was the ripe old age of 18 months. I never knew him.

Imagine, at 26, 3 kids and widowed. We didn't have much, but we had love. The Social Security and VA
survival benefits made a huge difference, but she still had to pinch every penny till it screamed.
As always, Grandma was there-thank God.

Thanks to her love, her guiding hand, and, admittedly, her occasional bouts of profanity, my brothers
and I not only survived, but thrived. I'd be horribly remiss if I didn't mention my beloved stepdad, Wes.
Mom chose very wisely there! Their marriage yielded my younger brother.

Happy Birthday, Mother. You've kicked my ass when I was wrong for 55 years now. Here's to another 55!

The house she used to live in is two doors away. So the name "Martha" means a lot to me.
