Warning- 'Marley and Me' is not all comedy!( spoiler)
I rented the DVD and watched it last night with my family.

There are many hilarious scenes with Marley's antics
and how his humans react to them.

However

It has a very tragic ending, especially if you recently lost a
beloved animal family member.( We did)

We went through a box of Kleenex last night.

1. I know what you mean...
Despite the fact that I had read the book and knew the ending, it was difficult to keep my sobbing relatively silent in the movie theater. Like you, we lost our beloved dog last fall, so it was tough to watch the ending. Still a good movie, though.

8. It is a good movie,Snacker.

My problem is I thought it was a Disney production.

You can count on happy endings with them.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog.
It is so damn hard to lose our animal members
of the family.

then i realized that dog looks like the yellow lab we said goodbye to a couple years back.

i don't think i heard as much crying in a movie theater when seeing Schindler's List. :wow:

11. That's what I mean, Creekdog!
The trailers give you no warning whatsoever
that the ending is very sad.

So you think you're seeing a hilarious comedy,
period!

Not entirely the case, here.

5. Hi Haole Girl!
You are welcome.
:)

It is very funny at times, especially when Marley
gets into mischief. LOL.

But the ending is so sad.
We all relived losing our Darwin two weeks ago.

If you are prepared for a very sad ending-
the opposite of a Disney ending( you can set your watch to them-:))
then it's OK.

If not- This is not the movie for you.

14. Hi Mvd!
I know- I'm hearing that from more people who read
the book.

The movie was very emotional- without melodrama.
( notice the absence of violins and other tear inducing instrumentals?)
It was very well done, and VERY emotional.

The movie took some liberties with sequencing, but I enjoyed it. It's hard to make a movie as good as the book, but they captured the mood well.

Hope you are having a good Monday!

The movie is based on a true story of newspaper columnist
John Grogan and his family (this of course includes Marley).

All and all it is a good movie.

Just be prepared for the ending.

sorry, but it's called life. it was sad, certainly, but it's a story about a dog's life. didn't you read old yeller? most dogs die before the people who feed them do. part of having a pet is knowing that it will die. and Marley had a good, long, healthy life. where's the tragedy?

39. Sorry, but it's all in how you look at it.

Even knowing the end is near, the passing of a loved one
can be very tragic.

I'm 57 and have seen two parents, two in-laws I loved very much
and four close friends die.

My critter members of the family who have passed number in
the 30's.

It NEVER gets easier, EVER!

47. and seeing a loved one leave you
no matter how or when, is a sad thing. no one is arguing that. but it's not, in this case, tragic.

which is more sad, or more tragic? the death of my 92 year old grandfather, who was confined to a wheelchair, blind, in crippling pain and incontinent, requiring 24 hour care? or my 17 year old cousin who died of an overdose in his own bed? yes, it was very sad when my grandfather died, since we lost him, but he was well past ready to go (in fact, I think he chose the time, since he called everyone the weekend before he slipped into a coma to say he loved us) if I could bring him back to life, I wouldn't, he was miserable in a failed body that had run it's course. he was ready to slip away and be in peace. it was a life well-lived, and inspirational still. sad, but not tragic. my cousin was just on the cusp of becoming the man he could be, also a life well lived, but one that should have been 60 years longer, ended by his own insistence on pushing the envelope. that's tragic and devastating. in one case, you celebrate what was, in the other you mourn what could have been. that's the difference.

48. I hear what you are saying,
but again, it comes down to perception and semantics.

Based on the last definition,

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tragic

"3 a: regrettably serious or unpleasant :"

tragic applies here.

But I do understand what you are saying.

A life well lived with lots of love contrasted with
a life that was tragically cut short are two different situations.

41. The tragedy is in your lack of empathy for others.
Yeah, I cried. I also cry at Ol' Yeller, Sounder, etc. Everytime I see 'em. It's called humanity. The ability to feel loss deeply makes life rich and full, and yes, worth living. Yes, dogs live shorter lives than we do. For those of us who love them, that is a tragedy. A deeply painful tragedy.

I'm sorry you don't understand this kind of affection. You should try it.

46. who says I don't understand it?
as I pointed out, it was a sad ending, but it was a happy movie. a life well lived isn't tragic when it ends in the reality of death. Everything dies, that's sad, but it isn't tragic.

you know the definition of tragedy when it comes to Art, right? suffering for the sake of the amusement of the audience. suffering that is brought about because of a character flaw. What was Marley's character flaw that you consider brought suffering onto him or others? or maybe it was a character flaw in another person in the film?

a film that portrays the life of a family with an animal in anything remotely resembling a real way is eventually going to have to include the death of that animal. to do otherwise it to disrespect a life well lived. unless you are adopting a parrot or a tortoise, that animal will die. to whitewash that, and the impact it has on a family who loved the animal isn't fair to life or death. death was part of the story, it's not tragic, it's part of life. how you die, and the reactions of people after that happens, is part of the story of your life. to not show that would be to diminish his life and the impact it had on others. sad? yes. tragic? no.

It's hard enough for us adults to deal with it,
for children it can be very difficult.
