I'm listening to my new recording of "Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg".

Typically Wagnerian, the overture alone is over ten minutes long. The whole opera runs close to five hours. So, I'll be here a while... B-)

3. It's part of the Chandos "Opera in English" series.

It's a recording of a live performance of the Sadler's Wells Opera Company from the 1970's. Norman Bailey as Hans Sachs, Gregory Dempsey as David, and Margaret Curphey as Eva. Reginald Goodall conducting.

I wouldn't have minded a recording of the original German, especially if it were the Vienna Philharmonic under Georg Solti. But the CD set was a gift, so I'm going with it. It's interesting to hear Wagner's musical style applied to operatic comedy, which is so unlike everything else he composed.

4. Is it being sung in English?

A lot of the humor in that opera is put into end-rhyme and I don't see how they could do it justice if its in English.

6. Yes. It's a pretty good translation, because a lot of the jokes and interpersonal humor

is coming through just fine.

The conversation between Sachs and Beckmesser in the Third Act was pretty funny...
