My parents are coming to Lelapin's college graduation - OY!
Mom and Dad were going to stay with his sister in Cleveland and come down for the ceremony. I found out last night that they've changed their minds and they're staying here. For a week. I love my parents, but I haven't lived with them or near them in 26 years. They last visited 2 years ago and before we got out of the parking garage at the airport, I was ready to go park them on the curb to go home.

My father goes from channel surfing on cable (I don't have cable) to surfing the internet (I have an aircard with a 5Gb monthly limit). What are they going to do all week?? I'll be working by then.

I love my parents. I'm grateful that at 48, my parents are still around. I just don't like an entire week of sighs (mom) and snark (mom).

2. I have their itinerary
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 09:09 AM by lizziegrace
plane reservations have been made and my dad nearly imploded when my mom couldn't find her frequent flyer card so he could finish booking reservations. My dad's a grouchy bear and my mom's a puffed-up hen - eyes darting to find something she doesn't like. x(

4. Mom can't manage the stairs here (arthritis)
so anything that involves walking will be shot down. Also, my parents only seem to be able to manage one activity a day. I was visiting once and we were going out to dinner at 5pm. At 1pm, I wanted to run to the mall to return something. I got incredulous looks. "But, we're going to dinner at 5." "I know, it won't take long." "But we're going to dinner at 5." bleh.

6. We call them the Bickersons during the day
and the Snorkelsons at night. ;)

Mom won't like the stairs, at all. Or the old windows. Or the distance to walk from the garage to the house. I have no idea how we're going to manage the walk to the stadium on campus for the ceremony. I need to see if her Dr will get her a handicapped hang tag she can bring with her.

Or would she refuse to use it?

8. I just talked to her
and asked if she'd take the time to have her doctor fill out the necessary forms for a handicapped hang tag. She's balking, but I reminded her that streets are closed around the stadium and we still may have to walk 1/2 mile from the parking lot. If she got a hang tag, we could park close to the stadium.

9. I'm no help on this one.
My own parents drove me insane up until my father had a stroke, which slowed them both down enough to give up the snark and guilt trips. Short of making one of them have a stroke or some other half-debilitating condition, I don't know what to do. Good luck, kiddo!

And Congorats on Rabbit Lady's graduation! :applause:

11. Seem's like yesterday she was in kindergarten
Now she's all grown up. Wow...

She'll be off to some far-away city by the end of the summer. That will kill me. :(

My parents are getting to the point that traveling is almost too difficult. I plan to enjoy this visit and not let my mother get away with sighs and snark. Life's too short...

Oh good grief. I'm sorry to say I have NO suggestions...

Valium in the coffee perhaps?

For all of you!

Have you told them that you'll be working and therefore unavailable for entertainment purposes? Yikes.

You have my complete sympathies. Complete.

And biggo congrats on Lelapin's graduation! I know how proud you are!

25. Tell your dad that if he wants to watch television, he can pay to install cable for a week
I'm not sure it's possible to sign up for cable for one month due to contracts, but he can try it.

Netflix is another good idea.

I hope you'll be so busy with Lelapin's big day and your job that they don't have a lot of time to get in your hair.

I'll be crossing my fingers for you.

26. congrats to her on her graduation - it doesn't seem that long ago that
she was going off to college. It's so wild to see kids "grow up" as you see their posts on DU!

I think of Ava, Left People Finish First, Kleeb and some of the other high schoolers we've all seen on her in the last several years, well on their way, or just starting out on college adventures. That's pretty cool.

54. Yep
we do it for the kids. Since Lelapin is a clone of me, she gets pretty distressed at their behavior too. We were visiting one Christmas and went shopping after the holiday. Mom and Dad had been bickering and snarking so much that she apparently pulled my mom aside and asked if they were getting a divorce. (Lelapin was in middle school at the time...)
