How can ghosts wear clothes?
Do the clothes die and become ghostly, too? Or is there some magic power that allows ghosts to make real clothing translucent?

1. Maybe it's what they had on when they died.
But if they died in the tub...

Maybe it's what they were buried in. Old ghosts always look dressed up.

2. But why would the clothing become ghosts with them?
It seems like the material world would stay material, and ghosts would be naked.

3. What you are looking at when you see a ghost

...is the concentrated, still cohesive and still viable energy left behind by the entity. And just the same way that clothes trap a body's heat, the body's energy expands via a kind of spiritual osmosis to the clothing that the body was wearing when it died, allowing you to see the outline of that energy via the clothes.

Dude, I have no idea. Good question though. :D

I don't know if I would want to see a naked ghost.

Why wouldn't they get dressed up?

5. they wear something the viewer will remember so they can be
reconized better--otherwise you might say: "damn! she looks just like aunt winnie!" but when you see the person is also wearing your dead aunt's clothes you can state with conviction: "damn! that's aunt winnie!"

Do they have a ghost Walmart where they buy ghost clothes?

12. Ghosts aren't invisible? Where do they hide, then?
They walk through walls and stuff, and the clothes go with them. And in pictures they are always hazy.

15. I want to be seen in an Aston Martin, but I don't have one to be seen in.
They have to have clothes to be seen in clothes. Or are you saying they create an appearance of clothes where there isn't clothing? That would mean that every time someone sees a ghost, the ghost wants to be seen, and is fully conscious of being a ghost, since the clothing wouldn't exist, and would be a conscious creation of a ghost.

so you want to be seen in Aston Martin? be my guest. or my ghost--you could probably be seen in whatever you wish to be.

9. I can guess why. But how? How do the get clothes?
If they are spirit and clothes are inanimate objects, how can they wear them? In "Ghost" Swayze had to learn how to move stuff so that it didn't just pass right through his fingers, but he was already wearing clothes. Wouldn't they have just fallen right off him?

23. Well, to the extent that matter "exists,"

...a thing is perceived as a specific "inanimate object" based upon that thing's particular gathering of protons, electrons and neutrons bound together by energy at a given point in time.

We also know that matter eventually decays, ie, the energy binding the molecules together weakens/disintegrates over time (which may be influenced according to external forces such as heat, moisture, etc.) until it is no longer strong enough to hold the matter together (ice turning into water, water turning to steam) when both energy and matter particulates go their separate ways.

So therefore, even though the clothes are "inanimate matter," the clothing matter itself contains the energy that is holding it together, and it is that energy you see as the "clothing" when it has become one with the ghost's life-force/energy, at a point where they are both somehow trapped in a time and space continuum wherein their energy is prevented from normal time-driven dissipation and matter/energy recycling.

31. oddly, that is probably what the folks who discuss these things would say

A lot of folks have seen these "images, presences," what have you. There must be some explanation. Hard to say. I suspect the neuro-psychs would say that it's just some type of perceptual anomaly...

32. All I can say for sure

...is that it's not my place to decide whether or not others have seen a "ghost," or whatever anyone wants to call it. It would be pretentious for me to even try to discredit things that may well be beyond my comprehension, and/or to try to substitute my own judgement and experiences for that of another.

34. I admire your judicious response - minds function best when open!
In my work, I have had many people tell me that they have "seen" ghosts, or experienced them in some way, and to me it tends to indicate that folks have a desire to maintain some connection to those that were important to them. What these essences entail is another matter entirely, and perhaps some day there will be some explanation.

17. Because the ghost is a creation of the seer's mind, and s/he feels more comfortable

seeing this manifestation of a deceased relative/friend with clothes on.

They walk on walls because they choose to. If they wished, they could sink into the floor just as easily as they walk through walls.

Duh!

25. You're making the mistake of assuming a 1:1 correspondence between body and ectoplasm
If that were true, then ghosts would be nude and would look like they did at the time of death.

However, the ghostly form is not the translation of the physical into the spectral. Instead, it is a representation of the physical, as governed by the character and personality of the entity in question.
