4. Even If I ask nicely?
What I want to do is get something with a decent (fixed) interest rate so that I can pay off a student loan where I'm getting screwed on rates.

Have I mentioned that post graduation resources for working student loans into a reasonable condition seem to be absolutely lacking? I just called my school. From the sounds of things, lending has changed a whole hell of a lot since I went there. But more importantly, none of the three people i spoke to could recall ever having been contacted by a former student looking for informational assistance.

I run into the same thing at the banks. No one does student loans, or if they do, the guy who does that is always out. Tried one bank every day for 3 weeks, until they finally admitted that they had laid the guy off.

And everyone on the internet wants confidential info just to talk to me. I would rather not enter all my vital info until I have some idea if you can offer me anything usefull. Or at the very least until I have some way to verify you are indeed a legit outfit. Seems reasonable to me.

What the hell.

3. I think it depends why you want the money.
If it is to start a meth lab, I'm going with no.

6. I want to pay off a student loan with a very bad interest rate
Hell. I am daily getting closer to using credit cards to pay it. I get a better rate on those.

The main thing stopping me is an even greater distrust of my credit card companies than my student loan company.

11. Come now, I need solid estimates here
Are we talking 6%, or 16%. And what do the penalties and origination fees look like here. I'm counting on you here as I don't believe I have the acquaintance of any loan sharks myself.

14. Standard loan shark vig is 10% per week.
Their collection tactics are a little different than most banks though if you don't pay.

Don't believe what you read. 80% of the time...

And never believe anything I say. I mean, I never do... :D

10. I never do
I have been told by three different lenders that I will have absolutely no problem getting a home loan. And I am still getting credit card offers daily. Apparently 6 that I carefully use 1x per year each just isn't enough.

But since the house I want just went into stasis for 60+ days, I figure on to the next task at hand.

15. You might if it was for business start-up purposes...
I was offered $36K last week. I think the business was the collateral...I'm not sure because I was declining it so I didn't really read the terms that closely.

20. Probably not...
they wanted me to go to a meeting and bring a lot of supporting documentation on the business idea...I didn't have the heart to tell them that I'd added my name to a sign-up list for information only because the guy collecting the sign-ups was likely being paid per valid name and address. I'm not starting a business and if I was, I'd probably borrow the money from family.

My student loan, and a statement saying I desire to have it paid. Seems simple enough. I could even sign it, and get it notarized.

22. Okay...
they might dispute that those documents support the premise that paying your student loans is in any way a profitable business proposal or has a solid ROI.

If it works for you, let me know...I've $17K that I owe Sallie Mae.

23. I hear Sallie mae is pretty torqued
Or so said the student aid department at my old school. Apparently they are refusing to do any new consolidation loans. And there's no break from payments while in school anymore.

25. Yeah, they're kinda miffed at me...
I'm on income-sensitive payment and they keep hitting me up with the "You can pay more than your reduced minimum payment." letter. Why would I do that? I can barely afford to survive as is and @ $100/mo. I'll have my loans paid off in about 30 years factoring for interest.

I mean my family is loaded but that's not my money...they don't share, that's why they're rich.

I am paying a lot more a month than that to them. I wonder, if the big 3 liquidate, and the chain reaction means Sallie Mae bites it, what happens to our loans?

27. They get sold to someone else...
same as a mortgage. I'm surprised that nobody ever bottled them into derivatives and tried to sell them as investment vehicles, the default rate is lower than mortgages.

30. That only works if you have asset salable for at least 150%
of the loan you want. If you are starting up from scratch, you are on your own.

31. No, this was specified as being to start a business...
Edited on Thu Apr-23-09 05:27 PM by Chan790
it was backed by who knows what and was being administered by some NPO whose mission it was to facilitate the formation of new businesses by people living in poverty. It was very clear that existing businesses were ineligible, beyond that I didn't read the details...as I said I wasn't interested. I signed up because they were paying some down-on-his-luck guy to collect signatures in front of the Stop and Shop. If my email addy gets him $2 to buy some food then..okay.

I'm sure there is a catch or condition somewhere though, I'll give you that. People don't throw $ into black holes. I can't see the administrating organization going along with it if there was a collateral requirement though as that defeated their mission.

edit: Let me see if I can find the flyer.

32. Chan, I'm not doubting you, but I went to a Fed Small Business Admin
conference many years ago when I was starting a photography business on nothing but a few old cameras, looking for money. At the time, I had hair halfway down my back, a leather jacket and jeans, and the woman speaker was terrified when I came close to her to ask her a question. She seemed to think I was going to attack her right at the podium and she seemed surprised when I actually asked a valid question and spoke intelligent English. I never qualified for a dime from these people, eventually gave it up after losing 10's of thousands of dollars over 5 years. Broke even selling my 4x5 view cameras to pay the rent.

Some people are not meant to run businesses, and I am one of them.

I hope you are right - the policy used to be if you really need the money, you won't get it.
