Poll question: Worst Power Ballad
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 09:04 AM by Bossy Monkey
Warning: you may want to shoot yourself if you click on this thread. (Oh wait; I needed to put that in the subject line, right?:))

As ever, I'll try to add in suggestions from your replies within the editing hour, though I'm downloading Windows Updates via dialup, so that may not turn out to be possible. You'll survive somehow, right?

I'm putting on "Dream On," even though I still like it after all these decades, just because it set the template (unless you count 3/4 of Barry Manilow's numbers and everything on Broadway from 1967 on, but still). I'll take it off assuming it has no votes and I'm actually able to make it back during the editing hour as mentioned above.

Edit: Oh no! Forgot "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"; I had saved that spot for "Other," but Other votes will have to be registered by replying below (darn the luck:)).

Editedit: White Lion's "When the Children Cry" replaces Guns n Roses: That thing with Axl at a grand piano

Editeditedit: Peter Cetera's post 1980 oeuvre replaced by Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" (and I've got your umlauts right here).

2. I love power ballads!
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 08:18 AM by Lyric
Except for Beth, which sucks.

Edit: Oh--and the worst power balled of ALL TIME is that horrific "When the Children Cry" song by White Lion.

:puke:

4. As I heard yesterday from a friend who's seeing a woman named Beth,
I've had the song stuck in my head for the last 24 hours. I don't actually have any kick against it; just want it out of my damned cranium. Anyway, that was the inspiration for the poll... just trying to defeat an insidious earworm.

8. Oh, c'mon! How could you forget THIS one????
This is the very first song I thought of when I saw your thread:

White Lion - When the Children Cry

Good lord.

9. I would say "Every Rose has its Thorn"
Besides now that Brett Michaels is getting airtime on VH1...:eyes: I hear that stupid song all the time..:banghead:
I confess to really liking "Open Arms" by journey though..I've even waltzed to it...

13. Is 'Open Arms' in 6/8 time?
I'm not feeling 3/4, but 6/8 is possible.

Hmmm... I never counted the time sig before.

17. It might be 6/8- its definitely a fast waltz
I was dubious when the DJ put it on, but it works surprisingly well...

21. It is 3/4 time
I looked up some online sheet music and it is written as 3/4.

Wow, I never noticed it was a waltz.

12. Poison... without a doubt
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 09:07 AM by southpaw
Anything by Poison wins by default.

Even if you listed 'Talk Dirty To Me' in a poll about power ballads, it would still win.

You see, Poison's suckiness transcends all boundaries and knows no limitations.

Poison's logo would win in a poll about the worst economy cars built between 1993 and 2001. That's how powerfully they suck.

On edit: 'Every Rose...' contains the lyric "Although we both lie close together, we feel miles apart inside."

Think about that. '...we both lie close together?' WTF?

15. I almost voted for that one...
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 09:12 AM by redqueen
cause that Mormon fuckwit that used to work here would walk around singing it and then try to defend it when I told him how much it sucked.

But they all suck harder than a black hole so... impossible to choose.

14. I actually think that more recent one from Aerosmith. Is it called "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"?
I really bugs me when lyrics repeat in the same sentence (i.e. "Cause I'd MISS you, and I don't want to MISS a thing."). It's so lazy, find a synonym for godsake.

This is what's called an embarrassment of riches.

23. You got me there; if I'd thought of it, I certainly would have put it on the poll
Ugh; well, it finally got "Beth" out of my head, but I'm not sure I'd call that an improvement. On its Songfacts page are a frightening number of people who think this is the apotheosis of great rock music. Or possibly it's the greatest group put-on since The Onion, I don't know.

I'm glad you included that piece of rotting wombat sphincter among the choices.

If this describes you, you're the worst power ballad ever.

27. I don't think a song that's basically Steve Walsh, a twelve string and a fiddle qualifies
as a power ballad, but must say that I'm no expert (assuming anybody is).
