I don't know if Sims 3 will be better. I don't like the way the faces look and it seems like you're only going to be able to play one family really, because all the other sims will age and marry and reproduce and die on their own. Plus, Sims 2 is frustratingly easy now - every sim born in the game hits permaplat pretty much as soon as their first kid is born and it seems like Sims 3 is going even more for the "durr, how do I make sim not pee on floor?" set with less needs and apparently being able to fill them with a click. A lot of people in the community are planning on sticking to Sims 2 - for those reasons and because they hate EA.
I'm not sure how custom content is going to work for Sims 3 - from what people are saying it seems almost like EA is teaming up with paysites like The Sims Resource to try and get rid of free custom content.
My husband pre-ordered 3 for me for Christmas, and I will check it out. My expectations for it aren't that high though, and I'm definitely not uninstalling 2. I'm trying to get my Legosita neighborhood to 10 generations before Sims 3 comes out. Growing the seventh generation up at the moment. :)
And yes, it's definitely worth it. The game itself is quite fun, and the community is cool and there's plenty of creative outlets. I used to write stories with the game, mostly based around challenges players would come up with like the legacy and apocalypse challenges.
