We left it on as long as he was interested in it, which was mostly to look at the old-fashioned cars. I found I was able to explain most of it to him. Violence and race relations are tough subjects, go with what feels right.

bad for kids to see. I'd explain that he no doubt threw a rubber frog against the tree. Other than that, seems fine to me.

fair amount of swearing. Doesn't bother me but does bother husband. So I told the kids, "Just because you hear it doesn't mean you have to say it." As far as I am concerned that's reasonable.

Husband was also concerned about lynchings and hangings but again, good teaching moment in my book as long as it isn't graphic. And ditto the Bible salesman who is a violent con-man and the "Christian" candidate for governor who is also a KKK grand wizard. Just because a person says he is good or slaps on a certain label doesn't mean you can count on them truly being a decent person, eh? (Heaven knows the last 8 years could have taught them that, but they were too little really to notice much of the ** mis-administration.)

the first half is great stuff; the second half (beginning with the appearance of John Goodman on the screen and from that point on) is boring and stupid and contrived and a waste of time.

My youngest is ten now, but she's seen it often enough. I saw that your hubby was worried about profanity, but that's never been a concern of mine. I've never raised my kids to believe that the world was different than it is.

My youngest has never really gotten it, though, so I don't know how interested yours will be. My teen started appreciating it around the age of 15. She understood a lot of it before then, but half the beauty of the movie--as with most Coen scripts--is in the language and the satire. I don't know how much they'll get.

Just my thoughts. Then again, I let my youngest watch The Big Lebowski. She left after a few minutes, not liking the F word. I've found the best way to get a kid to not do something is to tell them they can. Then they don't want to.
