Some of you may remember my breaking news from Florida, here:

Outrageous, definitely. But by no means isolated...

Two other Florida prisons zapped visiting kids with stun guns

Two more state prisons have acknowledged incidents in which guards zapped visiting children with handheld stun guns, bringing to three the number of facilities where the unapproved demonstration was used on "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day."

On Friday, the Department of Corrections said that several kids visiting Franklin Correctional Institution in the Panhandle on April 24 were shocked by a guard who was demonstrating what corrections officers do at work. On Tuesday, the department revealed that children visiting Indian River Correctional Institution in Vero Beach and Martin Correctional Institution in Indiantown were also zapped with 50,000-volt electronic immobilization devices.

The devices used on the children, who are between the ages of 8 and 14, require bodily contact. Used on unruly inmates, the devices usually knock victims to the ground, cause a few minutes of disorientation and leave two small burn marks.

Three prisons, potentially 6 kids tasered, 10 employees suspended, 1 state...Florida.

1. Brilliant. I hate to play armchair psychologist (actually, I love it), but what does it
say about the prison system that it contains so many people willing/eager to use violence on a child?

Also, wouldn't a device intended to take down an enraged adult have a more serious impact on a child?

gettig tasered

or

watching inmates with sheets up (AHEM), getting to see an inmate taking a dump, getting to witness a stabbing in the cafeteria, or listening to the howls of someone going insane in isolation.

3. That's some state you got there.
When my Dad took me to work at the prison all I did was read and do homework in his office and eat prison food (which was actually really good- my Dad ran the kitchen.) Oh, and I got a tour of the improvised weapons museum once. They use it for guard training to show all the crazy things inmates will make weapons out of or hide weapons in. The best is probably a gigantic ornate carved crucifix an inmate made- the top half pulls out and becomes a handle for the attached icepick.
