Why do I get 7-9 hours of sleep a night and still manage to fall asleep during the day?

Why do I get 7-9 hours of sleep a night and still manage to fall asleep during the day?
And, no, I'm not being lazy.

It's odd - I've been dozing off in class a lot, lately, even when seriously trying not to - I just nod off. I'd say I fall asleep in class one or two times a week?

Also, I never remember my dreams at night, but when I doze during the day, I kind of have these super vivid dream-type things.

I know there's probably nothing wrong with me, it's just annoying. Sigh. Should I aim for 10 hours of sleep from now on?

1. sleep apnea?
Do you snore or just "stop breathing" for a bit during the night? Do you grind your teeth? Is there a lot of noise? Pets? Allergies? etc...

That's daytime drowsiness and of can be a symptom of a problem (sleep disorder,depression etc). I would talk to your doc

3. See if you can get a sleep study done
I had the overnight one and the daytime one (I think it was MSLT or something which tests for narcolepsy).

Seriously, though, you might check for a sleep disorder, such as apnea.

7. I'd guess possibly a caffeine high come down
If you consume caffeine over 2 hours before you fall asleep you might be feeling tired due to the after effects of the caffeine. Cutting out the caffeine should make your awake time more even.

If not, then just poor lighting might contribute to the problem. If your offending classes are somewhat dark because the teacher/professor turns down the lights for overheads/presentations that could induce you to fall asleep. To counteract that, I'd suggest making your bedroom as close to pitch black as possible so that your body doesn't induce sleep when it is just in a merely dark situation.

Failing the above, I'd try power napping/purposeful relaxation/deep breathing anytime you have a couple to a few free minutes between classes.

Not much you can do about that, so I wouldn't worry about it. :smoke:

Seriously though, it's not uncommon for some, especially young, people to do best on 9-10 hours of sleep. Could it be a dull teacher and a boring subject?

I hope you can find out what's going on and I hope it's just normal stuff you can deal with. :)

You deserve to be well rested. It's a shame you feel tired all the time.

I know what that's like, but in my case there's a medical reason for it.

I've read about a correlation between AS and needing more sleep than the average person, and it seems to hold for my husband. :)

drink water and wash your eyes out if it is allergies. Try to find a good decongestant also.

13. I had a sleeping disorder that was just like this appears.
My doctor said I was skipping the parts of sleep where the actual resting goes on. So I was sleeping but not resting. Your dream memories might be an indication that this is going on with you. I was prescribed Ambien. It worked OK and I had no side effects.

It was a good solution at the time. Now I'm retired so I really don't have to worry so much about it. If I feel like a nap I take one. And besides, without the stress associated with working I've been able to sleep OK most of the time without taking drugs. I haven't had Ambien for about 4 years now. It's best to take nothing at all if you can manage it but if you need the help like I did, I say go for it.
