1. Lets all calm down.
This sounds emotional. I am sure you won't be as fat or as ugly as you think.

2. Who says older isn't pretty?
I've never been a bride. This year I'm going to be 40.

If you're truly in love and truly happy, you'll be a pretty bride no matter what your age.

5. Exactly!
Couldn't have said it better myself! I'll be 40 next January, I've never been married (although I have a 12-year-old son), and I get tired of people making me feel like I'm not complete unless I'm married and that there's something wrong with me because I've never been married at my age.

And I really, truly believe that there's no such thing as an "ugly" bride, all the weddings I've ever been to the brides were positively glowing, even if they weren't, truth be told, all that attractive. And that includes the weddings of older women, like in their 40's and 50's.

92. Well, I was in a very bad car accident...
...a day and a half before my wedding. I had multiple fractures on the right side of my body. I was married in my hospital bed in a nightgown that was sliced down the back and put around me because I couldn't sit up.

Here's a little DU history of the event:

4. LOL!
As a 39-year-old never-married single mama, there are, indeed, days when I feel exactly the same way. Then there are others when I can't imagine why I'd feel that way.

It seems to me that my single status bothers other people more than it bothers me, like I'm not a "complete" person unless I'm married, and all that hokus-pocus bullshit.

30. OHHHHHH,
I get it now, I'm sorry, lionesspriyanka, I didn't realize exactly what you meant and now I do. I didn't realize you were gay and wanted gay marriage to be legalized and that's where you're coming from! DUH! Geez, how damn stupid can I get sometimes, lol!

I'm sorry, LP, I'm hetero but it infuriates me to no end to see gays have to deal with this bullshit and to see the denial of the basic rights that us heteros, frankly, take for granted.

I really do believe that the day is coming when gay marriage WILL be legalized and recognized, the RW fundie wingnuts just are not going to be able to stop this ball from rolling all the way downhill. Too many heteros agree with gay rights, including marriage, and a lot of heteros know gay couples and are infuriated at the attitudes toward them and the discrimination against them.

It's like with the civil rights movement, it finally REALLY took off when the scales came off the eyes of enough whites and they saw what was really going on.

I agree with posters here, have the wedding anyway and to hell with the damn wingnuts!!!!!!

18. If I were you I would get married now (assuming your paramour
agrees). Pick a place, buy a dress, invite your friends, and plunge head long into a lifeof committment to one person. If the right-wing government and christian fundies don't recognize it, fuck them.

The most importnat partof being married is the public committment to one person. No law they pass can keep you from being committed to your partner and telling the world about it.

I'm not trying to minimize the real civil rights issue of unequal treatment under the law, but if you want to get married don't wait on the government to "permit" you to proclaim your committment. You have the ability to do that yourself.

your friends from DU and elswhere there to cheer you on and celebrate (and bring presents).

You should consider a wedding in Massachusetts around the time of the Dem convention. I bet lots of people would be there then. I will (as I selfishly try to schedule your wedding around a convenient time for me).

It's the people who accept you for who you are that are your true friends. I bet there are lots more of those people than you think.

<ON EDIT> Have you proposed yet?

but, then I met the right guy.

I was 39; and wore a skirt from Eddie Bauer-and my favorite birkenstocks.

I think I was a gorgeous bride.

btw, unless you are Gay, (I assume you are female by the dress thing) you do realize that when you get married, you will have to live with a boy, right?

That's not always easy...and I got the best one.

50. Are you looking for volunteers?
Everything aside, I hope you know there are those of us who do support you and your mate in getting married.

We (my wife and I) put off getting married for along time in solidarity for the GLBT community. She is bi and felt like she was abandonning her peers and friends by getting married to a man.

I love her to death but it kills me when we watch the news and she sees her friends being denied the rights we (or at least I) have simply taken for granted my whole life.

Some day, we will ALL be free.

59. No
Not really. It was pretty, but not much of a "gown". Green velvety material. The suite I got married in is the only suite I have ever owned and one of three I have ever worn. The other two were rented tuxes.

We got married at the court house, went to lunch with my mom and then to work the next day. We already had a kid together and had been living together for a couple of years. The commitment had been there for along time, just not the piece of paper.

And for all you fundies who may be reading this, I didn't get married in a church! God and or Goddesses were never mentioned in my civil ceramony there in the court house. Why can't my friends get married?

52. Here's what I'd do...
drop everything and head to San Fransisco and elope. (I hear the weather's wonderful). Rent a big convertible and deck it out with the cans and "just married" soap. And then drive a cross country, straight through middle america.

54. Dear,
even if you were to gain weight, age a little,
your beauty is timeless
so don't sweat a thing.

and who knows,
when it does happen you might decide wearing yellow or black,
green or dark blue would reflect your current mood/feelings
more accurately.

56. dear practical one
alas i can only think of a wedding in red (i am indian and have never thought of it in any other color)...plus i want a REAL wedding where everyone is happy for the brides..not a depressing wedding where everyone thinks the brides could have done better.

thank you for your concern...if i have a wedding will you come?

60. of course
i am happy, i love to dance and be merry
and i want to see you in red.

i am ashamed to admit that all i know of Indian weddings
is what i viewed in Bend It Like Beckham.
are there any similarities(have you seen the movie)?
i want to come and wear something risque, not my style
but what the hell, YOU only get married once in Red. :-)

82. Do you want a dress similar to this? (only red)
This is me with my husband (he's from Karachi, Pakistan) and some friends at our reception in June 1997. We got married first in Reno in 1995 and then had an Islamic wedding in Wichita in May 1997 and a reception the next month.

I think you should have a beautiful wedding of whatever kind you want. Good luck to you!

86. Why not just get married?
You have a wife-in-waiting - and I'll bet if you invite your family despite their grumblings they'll show.

This is, after all, their daughter...

And if by chance you decide to come out to San Francisco to get married, I'll come, throw rice and get drunk. And I'll bring a baby!

88. Then you don't need them
invite friends, co-workers, people from DU, your cats....

Just have the wedding.

Have beer.

Oh, and the cat carrying the wedding rings trick you think you can teach them...it never works. The cats just run into the bushes and stay there.

90. If your family won't come now
what makes them important?

If they won't come now, will they come if it was legalaly recognized by the state?

I'm sorry, LP, but from what you say it is time to move on with your life and let the world be damned.

Maybe you and your brother could get married ... at the same time to different people.

94. Seen the posts about your homophobic relatives....
Forget them! You should get married in San Francisco THIS SUMMER!

And as for being fat or ugly, you are really pretty. I know, I'm a hetero guy (age fourteen, so the hormones just make it worse :)) and you are very pretty. So Don't worry about your physical appearance.

Have the wedding in San Francisco and I would come as would some other DUers i know. Or have it in NYC, whichever makes you more comfortable. Although I would love to attend you wedding. Best of luck to you and your partner!

50% of marriages end in divorce for a reason. Marriage stinks. Go, have fun and enjoy life without others telling you what to do.
