Oh my Christ, it defies description: co-director of the Miss USA organization resigns

Just one day after learning that Carrie Prejean will keep her Miss California crown, state pageant director Shanna Moakler resigned.

According to a report in Us magazine, the co-pageant director and former Miss USA said it was “in her best interest to resign.”

"I cannot with a clear conscious move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it, or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth," she said. "I want to be a role model for young with high hopes of pageantry...

Moakler has appeared in her own ad supporting gay rights, shooting a print ad on April 28 that slammed Proposition 8, the initiative that banned gay marriage in California.


I mean, I respect this, that she's doing it, apparently, over the gay bashing ignorance of Prejean.

But still - the irony here floors me. Isn't this like Al Capone's getaway driver deciding to leave the gang because he can't ethically reconcile that Capone doesn't wash his hands before eating? Or someone leaving the Republican party because they're ethically disturbed by serving alcohol at fundraising dinners? Or leaving the Nazi Party because they don't grow their veggies organically?

7. Wasn't Ms. Moakler a Playmate?
I applaud her stance re: Ms. Prejean, but it seems to me that Moakler might also have been preemptively trying to avoid a controversy of her own?

9. She was married to Travis Barker (Blink 182) who just
recovered from a plane crash that took the lives of everyone but him and DJ AM. It was a small private plane. I feel like Shanna would be a dem. They had a reality show on MTV or VH1 some time ago. And I do believe she did pose for Playboy.

10. I knew I'd heard her name recently in a different context. Thanks.
And I didn't mean to imply that her appearance in PB indicated a flawed character. Clearly she's on the right side of the prop H8 issue.

12. Oh I knew you didn't. I am not 100% sure that she is a dem, but
I just really don't think she is the republican type. At least not from what I have seen of her. She seems like a liberal gal, and she did resign, so that has to count for something. Not sure what her other job prospects are. I do remember on her reality show she was trying to be an actress.

11. Why would there be a controversy regarding Shanna
She's led a very public life, and there's plenty of people who know about her stint with Playboy and her on again off again relationships with celebrities.

13. Doh! I knew that I worded that badly...
What I meant was that if she'd remained on the committee and the Prejean flap kept rolling, I suspect that some asshole would bring up Moakler's own career as justification for disregarding Prejean's photos. It would be a bullshit tactic, but I wonder if Moakler herself thought something along these lines.

IMO, Prejean's bigotry is more than sufficient reason to disqualify her as any sort of "representative" of California or any other state in the Union.
