I got married this morning in San Francisco!
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 07:23 PM by 94114_San_Francisco
My partner and I were married this morning in the rotunda of the San Francisco City Hall at 11:15! It's been a wonderful day and you can't imagine what it's like to hear the people in the rotunda cheer and applaud when your ceremony is complete...it's exhilarating! My husband and I had a big wedding in August of 2002 (with all the trimmings) and our wedding this morning is certainly special and meaningful to us! We feel fortunate to have had 2 ceremonies; one shared with family and friends, the other an occasion specifically for us.

Our ceremony this morning at City Hall below:

This is a sign in the City Clerk's Office (I thought you would appreciate this!).

Sadly, about an hour ago this came over the newswire: "Court Orders Halt to SF Same-Sex Marriages" (http://beta.kpix.com/news/local/2004/03/11/Court_Orders_Halt_to_SF_Same%2DSex_Marriages.html). Looks like we just made it by a few hours.

Well DUers, for those of you who appreciate irony...how's that for a day in the life of 2 gay men in San Francisco? Health, prosperity and best wishes to all of you!

edit: clarity

State high court tells SF to stop weddings

It'll decide on legality of same-sex marriage this spring
Waiting in line for marriage licenses at City Hall, Jeanne Rizzo, right, and her partner Pali Cooper were dismayed when the California Supreme Court stopped same-sex weddings in San Francisco, Thursday.

The state Supreme Court ordered a halt Thursday to same-sex weddings in San Francisco and said it would decide within months whether the city had the authority to issue marriage licenses in defiance of state law.

In a pair of unanimous orders, the court granted requests by Attorney General Bill Lockyer and by groups opposing same-same marriage to bypass lower courts and review the issue itself. The court said it would hold a hearing in late May or early June and rule within 90 days of the hearing.

While the case is pending, the court ordered the city to issue marriage licenses only according to California law - which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman - "without regard to (city officials') personal view of the constitutionality of such provisions.''

The order does not affect the approximately 3,800 weddings performed at City Hall since Feb. 12, after Mayor Gavin Newsom authorized same-sex marriages and said he considered the state law unconstitutional. Those weddings would have no legal status, however, if the court ruled that Newsom lacked authority to defy state law.

The court said it would decide only the narrow question of whether Newsom's order, and the city clerk's issuance of marriage licenses, violated a state constitutional provision that requires administrative agencies to follow state law until an appellate court declares the law unconstitutional. The city contends the constitutional restriction applies only to state agencies and not to a charter city like San Francisco.

The justices declined requests by Lockyer and same-sex marriage foes to address the broader question of whether the state marriage law violates guarantees of equal protection under the state or federal constitutions. That issue can be raised in a separate lawsuit, the court said.

We had a wonderful honeymoon in 2002 - 6 weeks in Europe. It was a once in a lifetime adventure but we're hoping to do it again (why not go for a twice in a lifetime opportunity?). :7

I was starting to wonder if any gay DUers had exchanged vows. I think it's wonderful. It's a single step in the direction of equal rights and another poke in the eye of the assholes of the world. WIN/WIN!

I wish you many happy years of wedded bliss! It's about goddamn time.

Or, as we Jews say, Congrats! No, wait, we say Mazel Tov! Too bad about the CA supreme court stopping the process. Even if the marriage license isn't valid (for now), I'll bet one day it will be.

You can always come to Oregon...they're still giving marriage licenses in Multnomah County (Portland) to gay couples. Portland's a nice city to visit, too.

Americans tell Bush: We will fight.....

to get you out of office!!!

I'm a straight Christian gal and I can tell you that I have no issues whatsoever with same sex couples getting married.

I mean, we talk about family values and yet we have TV shows to hook up total strangers to get married, Las Vegas where celebs can get married and annulled in less than 3 days, folks getting married just to divorce in less than a year...seriously maybe we should look at some of these things and do something to prevent this kind of corruption with marriage.

I know several same-sex couples who are looking into Marriage even if they have to travel cross country. I wish them the best and all the happiness in the world.

Stay out of our bedrooms - if the adults are consenting it's none of your business!!!!
