Power outage in my neighborhood last night. Are we turning into a friggin' 3rd world country?
This was the 4th power outage in the last 2 weeks. There's no construction going on in the area, no high winds, no cars running into power poles that I'm aware of. So what's up?

California electricity has SUCKED since it was deregulated. Thanks again, you Randian corporatist Republican bastards.

2. And you don't even want to know what lies below...
the streets nearby.

Seems like city/county maintenance has been placed on lower priority, lately.

3. I've got APC UPS units all over the house.
Most of them are 500VA or 750VA units, but I've got a 1300VA box with an LCD display for load and remaining charge levels that I've run 4 machines off of without a problem.

When the power goes out, the network stays up, the cordless phones all still work, lights stay on, and I the computers stay running. It is also comforting when there's a thunderstorm - the APC boxes will commit suicide before letting anything through. But one of the really nice things is that they condition the power all the time so brownouts don't freak out the computers.

4. Yes. When we get what the Repubs want, no government, no taxes, no modern infrastructure
no regulation of corporate predation, we become a Third World country. We've got a lot of work to do to get this nation back on its feet...

6. Our neighborhood gets a lot of power outages. I think it's due to ... SQUIRRELS.
Every so often we hear a loud "POP!" as the transformer blows. I then imagine a crispy squirrel. :(

7. That's not an issue where I am. The squirrels are smaller and less malicious.
I think it's just an ancient power grid, a section of town that is mostly lower on the socioeconomic ladder, and a bunch of local morons who "don't want no higher taxes".
