i spoke to my best friend today, she is sad but resigned to her mastectomy
(A surgical procedure that removes the breast, surrounding tissue, and nearby lymph nodes that are affected by cancer).

The thing is every time i think about it (which is once every hour) i keep tearing. i don't know how she is handling this at all. it makes me feel like someone is punching her, and i am watching but cant stop it.

its really heart wrenching.

2. Tuesday night, when I had bunco, I talked to my friend who had
breast cancer about your friend. She went through the same thing. The sorrow at losing a breast, the knowledge that she wouldn't be able to have any more kids, etc.

She did say, that once the surgery and chemo were over and she knew she was going to live, that the loss of her breast stopped mattering. And, she did have reconstructive surgery, so you'd never know by looking at her.

Having never been through this, I don't want to give you the impression I'm trivializing, just that there perhaps is light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

And, she should really get into a support group.

My best to her. You're a good friend, pri.

4. It's a huge decision
My aunt was a huge help to me during that time in what to expect. I did opt for reconstruction later on and am happy about it, but honestly w/all the scar tissue could have left it alone and been alright too. To me that was more traumatic than losing the hair, going through chemo or even if treatment didn't work. We are so silly about simple things sometimes. I just had to come to grips that what made me a woman didn't live inside my breasts but my heart and brain. Once you get past it though, it's not so bad. A support group is extremely helpful if your friend hasn't found one already.
