True or False? If you have a vegetable or fruit that has one area of mold or fungus,
the entire thing should be thrown out, rather than cutting off the portion that is contaminated and eating the rest?

The health guru talking points I am hearing lately is that if even one portion of a vegetable or fruit is marred, the entire thing should be discarded.

I have never seen any studies either way on this matter, but I just don't know. Is this true, or is it false?

1. If you're allergic to mold, just throw it all out.
It's possible mold spores are all over the entity and have yet to "blossom", so to speak.

2. Cut off at least 1 inch around and below the mold.
Small mold spots can be cut off fruits and vegetables with low moisture content.

But I throw it away anyway.

3. Maybe I should, but I hate to waste food.
You are probably right, though.

4. If you're not allergic, just cut around it.
The types of mold that grow on food are very rarely pathogenic. They're just unpalatable.

5. Blech! I am throwing it out. I hate to be wasteful and all, but
there is no way I can enjoy it knowing that is was moldy.

6. IIRC, the root thingies of the mold can go far beyond the spots
I forget what they're called but it begins with an "m". I throw away bread, fruit, vegetables and cheese at the first sign of mold but for cheese that may be an overreaction.

7. Yes, because in soft foods, mold can spread far deeper than you can see.
I'd toss the whole thing.
