Is this a oneupmanship thing? A few days ago, I went to lunch

with some people from a group I belong to. We all knew each other but aren't all close friends.

I was talking to "Sally" and said sometimes I almost want a house (I live in an apartment) just to have the yard to plant flowers and shrubs in.

Sally said, "No, you don't!" It annoyed me but I sidestepped her remark and said, "It is nice to just call the apartment office and tell them the bathroom sink is stopped up."

Is this a boundary issue? I wouldn't dream of telling any of you DU'ers that no, you don't want to move to the beach/the mountains, Canada, etc. Or anyone in RL either.

If anyone can contribute a well-chosen but lightweight answer to remarks like this, please do.

1. My response would be "Oh, really? Why don't I?"
Frankly, I don't see what this has to do with oneupmanship or boundaries.

3. You may be right. I'm sensitive to that because I used to be real
quiet and a lot of people perceived me as being easily pushed around.

2. I suspect Sally’s experience with house ownership stinks.
She was just relating her own feelings. So many people are upside down on their mortgages now and the expense and responsibility can be a burden. I believe this is a good time to purchase a house however.

This is a beautiful time of year for gardening too.

4. I can see myself saying the same thing Sally said
with no arrogance or oneupmanship intended at all. Sometimes (often) I long for the days when I lived in an apartment in town. Wash the dishes, vacuum the floor, and chores pretty much done. Now there is an endless list of things needing to be done.

Maybe it was some sort of dig, or maybe it was nothing at all. Just talk.

5. I can see where you'd see it as oneupmanship
People who respond like that are often people who think their experiences are the most important and the only ones that matter. It's annoying and does rather smack of "I know better" or "How do you think I feel?"

But I like the way you responded to it because it showed that you don't really consider it all that big a deal. Far better than arguing.
