I've seen a few posts about this so I'm curious
What's the big deal with Buffy The Vampire Slayer? I saw a few episodes of it way back when because I had a girlfriend who liked it. Even though the lead character is smoking hot, it still managed to bored the living shit out of me. It seemed very adolescent and angsty. I saw the movie, too, but I don't even remember anything about it.

Why the obsession? Did I just happen to see a bad episode or two?

3. Why do people like Star Trek?
Why do people like Star Wars? I was never a Buffy fan, but alot of people enjoy vampire stuff. And apparantly Buffy the TV series was witty and clever and well written was engaging plots

5. That's what I'm asking, numbskull!
And people only like Star Trek because they want to feel like their geekiness in the future will be appreciated...

Newsflash: it won't be.

STFU Freak!:P

People like what they like. I like science...science fiction is not a stretch for me. I happen to like fantasy too. Why? I dunno. I just like it. Maybe because I find the world a bit depressing sometimes and I like to imagine a different reality...
edit: you realize that there are strong erotic undertones to vampires stories right? thats why soo many people like them, I've heard...

Okay, there should be an equivalent to Godwin's Law for this sort of thing...

14. Because it told stories about life (and just used vampire killing as a pretext)
I admit I watched the first time for the jiggle factor - but found myself completely enthralled by the witty dialog and interesting plot lines. At that point of my life I watched some news, lots of sports and Buffy.

Believe it or not Buffy raised the bar, significantly, for television.

15. Lots of color and movement.
It keeps my attention.

People slam the film, but I thought it was fun. Anything with Rutgar Hauer classifies as good, no-think entertainment.

Never watched the series, but I'm sure it's an extrapolation of the phenomenon.

16. I asked one of the mega-geeks at work
Apparently, fans of the series hate the movie. Or maybe he just does. I'm not asking again.

19. Yeah, there seems to be some partisanship
and it's a discussion I'd avoid, as well.

I think DUer 'Eshiva' is an ardent fan of the series. Hope I got her name correct.

17. Because it's about high school. Duh!
And I swear half the adults in this country think they're still in high school. It is the period of time in one's life that we consider most sacred in America.

the realization that the world doesn't give a shit that you scored 3 touchdowns against your biggest rival or that you were captain of the cheering squad.

22. yup
I loved marching band, but outside of that it sucked. I couldn't wait for college, which went FAAAR better than high school. The political volunteer work I did in college was way more instrumental in getting my current job than anything I did in HS.

18. My wife got really into it, and despite myself, I got hooked, too.
And I've gotta say, that like Star Trek, the real appeal of Buffy for most fans is the interplay between the characters. The stories get old after awhile (the show even made fun of that: "The Apocalypse.... AGAIN?!?!?") but it's the character's stories that keep things flowing.

That said, if you couldn't make it through one episode without being bored, then probably you'd never be able to endure long enough to care about the characters.
