Who Gets Your Vote For Best Fast Food?
Edited on Wed May-27-09 03:12 PM by OmahaBlueDog
Inspired by Bertha Venation's fast food hating thread -- what fast food do you love? Why do you love it? Do you love it because your chosen place is healthy? Is it cheap? Is it the rush that only comes with biting into something that has 4 days worth of calories before the fries and soda are factored in?

My favorites, in no particular order:

Roy Rogers - the venerable Mid-Atlantic chain once owned by Marriott. When I go to Maryland, I head to Montgomery or Frederick County to find a Double R Burger (1/4 lb beef, topped with a slice of American cheese and shaved ham).

Culvers - Home of the Butterburger -- and really yummy frozen custard. Found throughout the Upper Midwest.

Taco John's - I never ate tacos or burritos with potatoes until Taco John's. They have these things called "Potato Ole's" - they're like the hash browns at BK, but with seasoning. Another regional favorite.

84. Carl's Jr
Consumer Reports listed the least healthy fast food, and some type of Carl Jr's hamburger topped the list. It had the calories of 13 Krispy Kreme donuts, the fat of more than 10 slices of bacon, and the sodium of 20 orders of McDonalds fries.

Sadly, though, quality control at In-N-Out has fallen dramatically.
Last 2 times we went there, we ended up with dry, tough burgers, and it was so crowded we didn't feel like waiting in line to complain. At two different locations, too. Really terrible burgers. So long, In-N-Out.

77. Cluck-U Chicken
When I was in college there was one right across the street. They made a sandwich with fried chicken, garlic spread and mozzarella which was heaven on a bun. Add curly fries for maximum enjoyment...

I just made myself hungry....

An intrepid soul bought all the trademarks (after Hardees bought and destroyed Roy Rogers) and has brought back the franchise with original menu items.

On edit-- and you are 1000% correct -- I go with horseradish sauce. A touch of BBQ sauce on top of that kicks it up even another notch.

98. YES!!!!
It's like we're Dueling Burgers, each one of us remembering something else.

The lovely golden foil wrap, remember that?

And, HOLY COW!!! There are TWO Roy Rogers near here! And they still have the Double R Bar Burger!

I've never used so many exclamation points in a post, but this is amazing news! I thought they were gone forever.

When I graduated from law school, my husband arranged for my favorite Roy Rogers to put my name up on their marquee, with "J.D. CONGRATULATIONS!" after it.

A couple of years later, someone held up the place, herded the workers into the refrigerator, and killed them all. One of them was a child of one of the Americans then being held hostage in Iraq - a long time ago.

The Roy Rogers never reopened, was razed, and today, a KFC sits on that site, but I think of that Roy Rogers every time I drive by.

Thank you SO much for this link.

We LIVE!!

99. When I land in Maryland, once I hug my parents, it is generally the next stop
I miss the Roy Rogers in BWI and Newark Airports. Long before airline food was eliminated,I'd be ordering food while People Express would be boarding my flight.

I have a hazy memory of that horrible RR incident; I say "hazy" because an almost identical incident happened at a Wendy's in Fort Lauderdale. I'm guessing you grew up in roughly the same time and region that I did. I lived in New Carrolton, MD from 1969-75, and in Columbia, MD from 1975-83. My folks still live in Columbia, and my S-I-L lives in Monrovia (conveniently near a Roy Rogers).

101. Your time frame is right on -
I graduated in 1976 and the Roy Rogers murders took place not long after my May graduation - I remembered that after I posted to you. I remembered it because all the photos of the restaurant that accompanied the articles about the murders had my graduation message up on the marquee.

How could I have forgotten such a morbid detail?

I found this in an article about the retirement of the Fairfax County prosecutor's retirement:

"The 1976 conviction of James L. Breeden for herding five people into a walk-in freezer and killing four at a Roy Rogers restaurant in the Landmark area."

Yep, you're a local, for sure. I'm in Alexandria, the West End, but practiced law down in Old Town for a lot of years. There was a Roy Rogers at the main intersection of Alexandria - Washington and King Streets - for years, long after so many had closed down. And, at the end, they no longer had Double R Bar Burgers.

Now, I see that there's one in the Mount Vernon area, not far from here, and another right in Alexandria, really close.

Thanks for bringing back so many odd memories, and the recollection of a truly phenomenal burger - which I shall be inhaling soon, and giving a silent salute to you, OBD............
