I'm just asking because I am a product manager for web products, and we don't even consider testing sites for compatibility in Opera... only for IE6+, Firefox, and Safari/WebKit.

Do you like features of the Opera application or is there something about they way Opera renders pages (and JavaScript)? There's a big difference. For example... Safari and Google Chrome both use WebKit to render HTML/JavaScript but differ greatly as far as browser features.

I personally dislike the way Opera renders content... and therefore have spent no time investigating the other feature of the browser application.

I have a friend who knows way more about computers/software/hardware than I do. He set up my internet with a firewall. I only use the internet in a limited account so nothing can screw with my registers (I have not done the virtual computer thing; I am not that motivated...).

Opera is part of all that. My friend has (and other sources have) told me about the evils of microsoft; how it is loaded with security holes, and how the company deliberately uses spy ware and everything you do on IE is reported back to microsoft.

Well, Opera lets me easily turn off:

~all cookies

~javascript (evil!)

~all popups

Not only that, but it easily allows me to ENABLE part or all of those for trusted sites, like this one. I can also easily block sites from popping up as redirection. It is very user friendly.

I used to use another friend's computer. It was on IE. The computer basically got completely destroyed twice in 3 years due to internet use. One site screwed with the registers and made the home page something YOU COULD NOT GET RID OF (due to hits-for-cash, my knowledgeable friend said). It would run some type of program on start-up that made that site the home page, even if you had deleted it before. I could not get rid of it (it DEFINITELY had something to do with the registers, and I don't know enough to screw around with those :scared:), but I knew enough old-style DOS to disable the web site from appearing. I took the file it was making on start-up, deleted it (would reaper next start up BUT: ) and made a file with the same name/extension. Then I made it system/read only/hidden! Website disabled because it could not create the file it needed! (but could NOT get home website back...)

Anyhoo, in MANY years of running Opera, I have had NO computer problems...

I appreciate your input... As a web product manager I embrace all user input and take it at face value.

That said.... I'm curious why you think JavaScript is evil? JavaScript is critical for modern web applications and a state-of-the-art experience... I'm not sure how you can enjoy the web without it.

BTW, I totally agree with your perspective re: IE and Microsoft... It seems like you've had bad experiences that color your current point-of-view. I use Mac OS X, and do not worry about viruses, registries, and whatnot.

Thanks for your input... it follows what I hear from other Opera users. I'm bummed because I hate to see folks turn off features that enable great web user experiences.

you don't want... I STRONGLY (aheh) suspect it was behind the register problem, it is CERTAINLY behind pop-ups and re-directs I don't want, it is probably behind spyware...


How can I enjoy the web without it? Turn off your javascript (if your browser will even LET you do that; Opera does easily :evilgrin: ) and see. I notice little difference from when I was on IE, except that some very small number of sites WILL NOT let me view them unless I turn on either cookies (which I KNOW are not a life-and-death NECESSITY) or javascript; to those sites I say "screw you", unless they are a trusted site.

I can not get any flash or youtube, though... small loss...
