How to find out if you're getting fired or not via instant messager

The names have been changed to protect the innocent. 5 minutes ago I messaged my boss upon seeing the super head boss enter the workspace... Here's how it unfolded:

Me <11:07 AM>:
something about you and Lloyd going to lunch
Boss Lady <11:07 AM>:
yeah
Me <11:08 AM>:
ray seems like he's jovial. i assume we're going to hire more people, right?
Boss Lady <11:09 AM>:
that's not my understanding
unless maybe the tech install people
Me <11:10 AM>:
no one's in the danger zone, right?
Boss Lady <11:10 AM>:
right now everything is up in the air b/c LM is working on the FY10 budgets. but there's not a cut list or anything.
Me <11:10 AM>:
remember, i bought you cookies.
Boss Lady <11:11 AM>:
like I keep telling you... if I have reason to believe people are at risk, I will give you as much notice as I can. right now, no one is *at risk*, but things are up in the air just like they are every year at this time b/c budgets are being reworked.

for what it's worth, I think you personally are not very at risk at all, b/c people feel that you have a broad skillset that could be applied in a variety of ways. this makes you a good investment.
