Give me some ideas for a good birthday present for a three year old.
I know he likes tractors and tools. It has to be good though because I have to beat my ex's gift.

Any ideas?

1. How about a set of toy tools?
My 3-year old loves to fix things around the house. There's even a Craftsman brand version if you want to match some tools that may be around the house.

5. Honestly, my boys all loved LEGO Duplo and plain old wooden blocks at that age.
All of the fancy toys were ignored or busted soon after unwrapping. My twelve year old still sits down and plays blocks and legos with his younger brothers from time to time.

This with an extra box of the blocks and you're golden.

6. general ideas
hint* in the long run, it won't be the 'things' that make him think of you good luck and give him a big hug

I have had hundreds of kids and my granddaughter just turned three. I gave her my old small lightweight digital camera and she has had a blast taking *pictures* which in turn can be put on the computer and she can see what see has created... also an easel for writing on...

books, mostly pictures of animals maybe big trucks http://www.amazon.com/Big-Truck-Book-Smart-Kids/dp/1843320681/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I don't really put much stock in kids toys. I usually get real stuff at their level. kids toys might get played with a bit and then forgot

water slide

dress up clothes - my son at 3 or so loved to dress up in any kind of costume or make believe

--buy a small lightweight toolbox at hardware and put in asst of kid tools or real tools that would not be dangerous. include styrofoam and tape, etc and help him build something...

small tent and flashlight and camp in the yard

8. A Sit-N-Spin that plays music.
Not only will the kid LOVELOVELOVE it, but if you send it with the kid to your ex's house, your ex will go insane.
