someone broke into my home last night, while I was asleep
They got a few things: my stereo, my MP3 collection on an exterior disk drive, my Macbook, my work laptop (gov't property), and worst of all, my Fender Stratocaster. I've had that guitar since 1992, and I've recorded one CD and one EP with it with my band, as well as writing a couple dozen songs on it. That guitar outlasted my marriage and lived with me in several places.

I had just restored it a few months back and was getting used to playing it again. Now some asshole is pawning it for crack. At least there's some solace: the shitheels grabbed the $300 Mexican Strat, and completely ignored the $500 Cordoba flamenco guitar, and the $800 Godin Multiac guitar that were right next to it, in their gig bags, ready to go. Oh, and I got the stereo a couple months ago at Best Buy for $80. Nice grab, dicknoses.

What's worse is the fact that they were in my house, nosing around, while I was asleep. I've never had that happen before. I heard some noise right before I got up at 3:00 and found out, but nothing major.

Criminals are some stupid fuckers.

12. Just my name
I don't keep anything sensitive in a digital format-- just for this reason.

My work laptop is property of the State of MN, my employer. So maybe they'll catch the guy when he pawns it and the jagoff can be charged with theft of government property :)

10. I'm so sorry. It's such a violation.
I had someone walk right into my kitchen and take my laptop and weekend bag, that I had just dropped on the floor when I arrived home from a trip. It was unattended for a matter of moments while I went to check on my kitty. They absconded with an ancient mac laptop (but it has most of my college papers stored on it :-() dirty clothes and empty plastic tubs that formerly contained road trip snacks. What a haul. :eyes:

I'm so sorry that happened to you. :hi:

11. that happened at my house a few years back
they were walking around in my house while my daughter and I were sleeping. VERY SCARY !!

They dropped my daughters computer and I woke up and went in the kitchen and flipped the lights on. They ran out another door. I have always wondered what would have happened had I walked in where they were.

I know exactly how violated you feel. It is a horrible feeling. I bought all kinds of alarms and stuff and didnt feel safe until I moved.

I hope you can recover your items.

15. Holy shit!
That's terrible.

If my computer were to be taken I would want to find the fucker and beat them!

I have been burglarized but wasn't home --- I felt violated! I mean I was very, very upset and the feeling of having someone take my things hurt way more than I thought it could.

That took some balls to do this while you were home.

My chihuahua is an excellent little guard dog. She warns us when anyone comes near the house.

I've been robbed, and almost worse than the items stolen was the awful feeling of the intrusion into your space. Must be even worse that you were home at the time.

Really sorry to hear about this.

PS- My husband has a $300 Strat, and he loves it!

20. I keep thinking I want to get those window alarms
Those lil wedges you can put inside the lower panes that will let out a loud alarm if someone tries to open your window from the outside.

There is only one way to break into my house (I have a backyard with extremely high fences and a shrubbery - it's difficult to get in the backway). But my front windows are extremely easy and honestly, I don't know how reliable home security systems are. Sure they do work but would anyone notice until after the actual act occurs.

I think I'd rather just put alarms in that if someone tampers with my windows I'll know right away. My only concern is how sensitive these things are - will it cause a ruckus on a rainy day?

22. maybe I'll try them out
the main thing is that a loud noise would wake me up in time to call 911 myself and get someone over to deal with this. My neighborhood is pretty safe but I am only a few blocks away from some really nasty neighborhoods where there is alot of drug dealing going on. You'll get some crazies walking by like the woman with a hole in her foot (she started talking to a few DUers who were visiting me that day )

29. We have the instant response alarm system.
Five large dogs who are VERY protective of us and ours. We had one guy try to get in the back yard a few years ago-when we still had 8 dogs. He didn't get far after he climbed the locked gate. I showed the cops the rabies tags on all of them and they hauled the guy off to the hospital and then jail.

We have recently had a series of break ins in our until-now low crime neighborhood. I have been torn as to whether I would blind or cripple the perpetrator if I caught them in the act. I never claimed to be a nice person.

24. My brother and his wife were sleeping when someone snooped around their bedroom
The next morning when they discovered stuff missing they walked in the nearby arboretum and found my SIL's purse at the edge of a creek. When he drove by a pawn shop my brother also found a small antique table that was taken from his house. Maybe you should go to a few pawn shops or call them, or do they get lists of reported stolen property from police ?
There are some answers here-

You're probably lucky you didn't wake up. No telling what the bozos might have done.

I'd be most upset about the computers. :-(

I can't imagine how frightening that feeling must be knowing that someone was in your personal space. Take care of yourself. And don't forget to file a police report. I hope that the police catch the person and that you get your things back. Mostly, I'm just glad you are safe.

30. We had that happen to us years ago...
The guy got into our basement and took a bunch of power tools and a nice, professional quality microscope that belonged to the kids. Fortunately, I had gotten a creepy feeling before I went to bed...can't really explain it...but I felt compelled to bolt the door from the basement to the main living area. The guy could've taken our guitars and violins if he'd been able to get there.

We didn't have a dog to warn us of an intruder back then. I started my dog search the day after. And I always bolt the basement door now, even though we've secured it from any potential burglars.

Odd thing was, the guy who did it was the homeless, drug addict friend of a neighbor. I was csually talking to my neighbor, and told him about the burglary. His eyes got wider as I told him about the things that were missing. When I mentioned the microscope, his jaw dropped. He said, "I think I know where your stuff is!" Sure enough, his buddy had put it under his porch for safekeeping. My neighbor hadn't thought too much about the tools; but he thought it was pretty weird that his friend would have a nice microscope like that.

We recovered everything except Mr GoG's router, which the guy had found a buyer for.
I don't know what happened to him...I hope he kicked his habit and managed to clean up his act.

Anyway, I can relate to how violated you must feel right now. I hope, as with us, that you're able to get back your things. My heart would break if someone took my violin.:hug::hug:

31. Sorry to hear of this... we had a break in recently too.
Stole my wife's laptop and my son's change jar :(

Strangely enough that was all that went missing. Our insurance doesn't cover cash, the deductible is $500 and the laptop was purchased new for $400.

I'm considering a security system or a dog (or both)...

33. Thanks everyone
I think I'll miss the guitar the most. That has some serious sentimental value for me. I had finally got it set up so that it was perfect for my playing style, and now some methhead has it. The laptops can be replaced (my employer said not to worry too much about the work one, as they are heavily encripted and damn near impossible to do anything with unless you know the password), and I have the MP3s all on my iPod, but I am really going to miss that guitar. And my peace of mind. :(

34. It is such a huge violation to have someone in your house taking stuff..
just imagine if your house burned down (as ours did) EVERYTHING would be gone.

That's not to say I don't feel for you. I had my apartment robbed (not home) years ago.

Recently, hubby and I were on vacation in the Caribbean and someone came into the house while we were
asleep upstairs and stole all my money from my purse I'd left downstairs and all the cell phones. The house phone didn't work! We couldn't even call the police until it was light enough to go several doors down to a motel and make the call from there.

Ruined our whole vacation.

I'm sorry you lost things of great meaning to you.
