1. I'm a purist,
and I get books free from my publisher -I still buy them, though, through alibris.

But, I have a few young friends who love their Kindles. Mostly because they travel so lightly, and my young friends are readers, so it makes sense.

As a daily thing, though, they read books. Interesting kids ....................

3. I wish I had one. I tried one out when the Board of the Humanist Institute
was considering providing their students with one. Alas, I don't think that is going to happen any time soon. Everyone I know who has one loves it. Particularly the storage capacity of the latest generation.

4. Mr. gbate has one. He likes it very much.
It's easy to order books and you can also get periodicals.

5. It seems like a way for me to read more books and not die
under the crush of those shelves and shelves I already have full of books collected over the last 25 years that I can't bear to sell to a used book store.

I've been thinking about getting one for that reason.

10. That is a very good question.
You can download thousands of copyright free books from Project Gutenburg and keep the copies forever but I haven't heard of public libraries instituting any E lending programs yet. Maybe if these devices become very poular? Who knows?

9. I've seen them and talked to people who own them, but
I just can't get into them. Books take up a huge amount of space in my home, office, and home office, but I love them.

Also, reading a novel on a kindle--or even a long short story--would be taxing. Magazine articles might not be bad.

11. Love it - my mom can still read books because it enlarges the text
also we have two kindles on the same account even though we are across the country from each other. Any book I get I can download on hers for free and then she doesn't have to wait for me to finish reading it and then mail it to her. Big books are much better to read on the kindle - picture holding a paperback versus a textbook. I get to try out a book for free to see if I like it. I can bring 100s of books on a trip and only carry something the size of a paperback

12. I have a Sony PRS 700
I love it! Do your research, Amazon isn't the only player in the game, although they're big. There are all kinds of formats for many different users. Go to http://www.mobileread.com/forums/, it offers a good place to start researching ebook readers and different file formats.

I started out wanting a Kindle, but I found that I didn't like the footprint...it was larger than what I was comfortable holding. With research I found there were other formats and providers. It may be that the Kindle is what you want, but I just wanted to let you know that there are other options.

I get most of my ebooks from Fictionwise (owned by Barnes & Noble), and yes some of the new releases are expensive, but in my former life I never bought a book until it came out in paperback. So now I wait for a sale on my ebooks, everything is still the same in book-world. Thus, 90% of the books I've bought from Fictionwise have been under $9.00. And because of my membership, I now have $100+ in rebate dollars, yippee!

Right now, I have 78 books on my Sony Reader, including "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina"...just to give you an idea of the storage space readers (Kindle, Sony, Cybook, etc.) carry.

13. read the one-star reviews on Amazon
Seem to be a fair amount of problems with upgrading and content and what happens to your purchase and downloads if you have a problem with the unit.

Also, I'd hate to take a semi-fragile and expensive thing like that into the bathroom.
