What do you think is your most important contribution to the DU community?
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 09:26 PM by yewberry
I mean, what are you proud of?

Do you have an OP that was really important to you? Did you make a difference for another DUer in some way?

I know they can't all be "Call Congress right fucking now" or the kudzu thread, but what makes you a proud DUer?

Spill, and bring links if you've got 'em.

edit: a sample of a thread that I'm glad I put up, since no one seems to be bringing links.

One sad day, I think I helped a little:

You're a go-to guy about music! One of the few (or only?) from the Maritimes! Straight edge and nice at the same time! Dreadlocks (well, maybe that was a while ago)!

You. Are. Being. Silly.

And technically, Newfoundland is not in the Maritimes. :P

But dang, you're not some random poster that no one remembers. Even *I* know that.

48. oh I don't think my contributions are very important
one little mission I have in life is to be the "liberal" in redneck land, and the redneck in "liberal land."

I try to be a good neighbor and "know" my work (aka street cred in an urban setting, I suppose) while being a damn liberal hippy. A the same time I try to be a socially conscious/just "Democratic" citizen while still being in agriculture and having a rural life - which includes raising and eating meat and owning guns.

to those who were gunning for actual government intervention in NOLA.

I don't know. There have been so many things we've discussed and learnt about on the DU. Almost bimonthly when Bush was in power there was some way I felt I helped. Perhaps it was my canadian perspective and I was able to share a belief in liberalism with those who were refusing to shut up in the USA even though the Bush White House was trying to cow Americans. I made some mistakes too. But I learnt from them.

I always really appreciated all of our Canadian members. I remember once someone described the relationship with the US as sort of like having a rabid dog chained to your leg.

Love our northern neighbors. I wonder how you managed to be so supportive in our darkest days over the past 9 years. Thanks.

I could relate to what Americans were going through. I made it through the darkness and then paid it forward. That is all you can hope to get out of any situation with psychopaths. That you make it through and find some way to make all you have learnt..all the dark lessons... mean something to someone else in a way that makes their lives better.

I also once delved deep into my inner geek, and made an interesting primary spreadsheet that no one had any interest in because everyone had their own idea of what was what.

Plus I read lots of things, thus increasing post "views' number.

In other words, live light upon the earth. I don't think I have made any real contribution here, but I do try to take information here and move it out into the greater world outside.

Even if I wanted to. For the first time in my life I have a home library; a room dedicated solely to storing and displaying all of my books, and sitting and reading them. I wouldn't dream of moving if it meant giving up my library. The commute is not bad at all. I drive to the Tacoma Dome Park-and-Ride, and take the University Express right to the U's Health Sciences Building. On the bus, I can study, chill out with my iPod, or catch up on some sleep. Life is good...

As for a specific post, back during the Tookie Williams execution business, I pwned some douchenozzle over the effectiveness of capital punishment as a deterrent. It's rare that I bother to put effort into a serious post around here, since I like to avoid GD and GD:P at all costs to avoid the idiocy inherent in each, but I couldn't resist on that one because it was actually helping me study for a final at the time, haha. There are fundamental misconceptions about science that are so common. It's terrific that you made an effort to create a primer for something that's part of so many lives but so often misunderstood.

I wrote the mission statement and posted the thread that got 10 donating members to sign off on the idea.

I was known as Droopy at the time. I just changed my user name recently, which, happily enough, reflects my improved state of being.

I'd have to say my empathy is my major contribution here...

I've had a fair amount of love and pain in my life, and somehow this enables me to identify with and help other DUers to feel better, to feel that they're not alone.

I've done a bit of good with my pic threads, and poetry threads too.

This place has changed my life, and anything good I can pay forward is what I live for.

If you need a break, take one. If you need support, find it. It's here.

234. Aw, come on.
You've never made a post that you were glad people read? You've never made anyone laugh? Never got caught up in a discussion that changed someone else's or your mind?

Nah.

235. That gets me through my job everyday.
Someday soon, I won't be able to say that.

Good news, though: it's hard to choke someone via the tubes.

214. the DU calendar
this may sound a little silly, but I like to think that by organizing the Photo Forum's annual calendar, I'm helping to bring smiles to people's faces every day.

237. Why would that sound silly?
The photo forum showcases a lot of talent. The group is one of the few that gets organized to bring the larger group together. That's pretty cool!

239. The holiday avatars
Back when we had the "Ask The Admins" forum, I suggested we have holiday-themed avatars. Skinner replied quite promptly that it was a good idea, and that they would do it.

They had them up and available in a day or so. :-)

242. Well, firstly...
Fighting against the Anti-Superman bias that DU has, its a full time job believe me :)

Secondly I pop my head in every now and then with American Indian issues, usually there is some great misunderstanding in those threads.

Thirdly, I fight against the Pro-Lex Luthor apologists....

:D

249. I'm one of the resident DUers with Asperger's Syndrome and am very vocal critic of...
...a lot of the pseudo-scientific BS and ignorant nonsense posted involving the Autism spectrum. Nothing makes my blood boil more than people regurgitating the BS peddled by quacks like Jenny McCarthy and will not hesitate to call DUers defending "chelation therapy" the child endangerers they are. I do not want to be "cured", I want to be accepted and tolerated by society.

I do not need to exaggerate when I say that Oscar the mixed animal is fundamental to DU. If I were to try to explain why I like DU, Oscar would be part of that conversation.
