1. Overrated.
Look, he was pretty good, but not nearly as great as everyone says. Does anyone honestly believe he'd have gotten all of those drooling accolades if he was still alive? I don't.

2. I'll have you know that I've never drooled about it, nor even salivated heavily
IMO the proper comparison is between Ledger's performance and the portrayals of the Joker by other actors. By that standard, he so totally out-classes everyone else (including Romero and Nicholson) that he deserves praise for his interpretation.

However, I recognize that this might be due to Ledger's Joker more closely matching the character that I'd always hoped to see onscreen...

3. I wasn't referring to you.

Nicholson was crippled by a lousy script and Romero was crippled by the fact that he was in a campy show that was practically a sitcom. As such, Ledger wins by default, but I think with that script even Ben Stiller probably could have come out looking like the best of the three.

4. I know you weren't. I was just going for the "righteous indignation" vibe
And, while I agree with you re: Nicholson and Romero, I've seen people (not you) argue that both were better Jokers than Ledger.

5. Insane. More insane than Ledger's Joker, as a matter of fact.
Ledger wins by overwhelming default. Romero provides and apples-and-oranges comparison, and not even God himself could have saved the script Nicholson was given.

6. I actually did like the movie, but not as much as my friends.

Ledger's performance was very good.

Some of the physical business he did I didn't think was really necessary (lip licking tics), but he more than made up for that with what he did with his voice.
He really was able to give the impression that the Joker was someone who's humanity had all but disappeared with that flat, grating, insane voice he came up with.

7. I saw it for the first time last week.
Great role, and Mr Ledger was very good. His performance was way more understated than I was led to believe. But it was one of those things, you know, where people raved about it so much and it took me so long to actually get around to seeing it, that there was just no possible way it was gonna live up to the hype. And, well, it didn't.

For what it's worth, here's why I didn't care for the movie. I never got the feeling that Batman and Joker were arch ememies. Yeah, Joker hated the fact that Batman even existed. But I never got that he might hate the man personally. And Batman goes from seeing Joker as a nuisance to seeing him as a real and serious threat. But again, I didn't feel that it was personal. And that's kind of my beef with all comic book movies. They take relationships that've taken years and even decades to build in the comic books, and then totally (and poorly) reimagine them so that they fit into a two-hour cinema-type storytelling format.

This movie would've been way better if it had been called "Joker," and they'd left Batman completely out of it. (Funny, that's two movies in less than a month where I thought Christian Bale's character could've been cut from the movie and it would've vastly improved the movie. Coincidence? Probably. But it's still funny.)

8. I thought the movie was miserable, depressing, and pointless
I could have saved the ten bucks and the three hours and just lived my usual miserable, depressing, pointless life.

Ledger gave a good performance, though.
