Can someone 'splain "spatial file managers" to me?

I just end up with dozens of windows at the end that all need closing. Of course, maybe it's my background. I go all the way back to Norton Commander and XTree:



Other than the fact that they're GUI, I just don't get what's so great about spatial file managers like Nautilus or Apple's Finder. They must be good for something or they wouldn't exist. Right?

1. Well, you can set finder so they don't open up in seperate windows like that
I've never worked with Nautilus.

2. you can do the same with Nautilus
either via preferences or shift-clicking instead of just clicking on a directory. I just don't get the 'big deal' regarding the reason for spatial browsing in the first place.
