I'm so proud of my daughter
I'm an atheist but only my family and close friends (and now you :) know. I'm too chicken to be open about it. My daughter, who is 15, is also an atheist and is not at all afraid to let people know. She got into an argument with a fundie about it today, and boy did she smack the girl down. She never instigates confrontations, but she's not afraid to express her beliefs when confronted. (Well, maybe she asked for it because she was wearing a t-shirt that said "It's All Bullshit- Faith Free") The ironic thing is that she gives me, the chicken shit, credit for giving her the courage to be honest. We talked about it, and I guess because I'm so open about my political beliefs (she's observed me in quite a few heated debates), it has given her the courage to be completely honest about who she is and what she believes. I guess it's my turn to learn from her example.

1. I'm proud of her too!
My girls are the same way,
2nd generation atheists!
(Well probably many, many
generations on my father's
side...) :)

Gotta love their openness.

I am always surprised to hear
co-workers of mine declare
their atheism out loud, too.

The younger generation is
going to go a LONG way towards
beating down dogma, stigma and
superstition.

:hi:

3. Yes they are!
Everyone I work with is pretty religious and I can barely stomach it. As for me, I swear I was born an atheist. My mother brought me to church and bible camps, and from an early age, I was like "Huh?" It never rang true for me.

Anyway, :toast:

2. I guess I'm more of an agnostic.
But with all beliefs, I don't really understand why we have to get in each other's face about it.

I don't care if someone believes in God and I'm not threatened by that in any way. I don't know why anyone would be threatened by my lack of belief either.

I wouldn't call anyone's beliefs bullshit, be they Wiccan, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic, Methodist, Jewish...whatever.

It's just not my place to judge.

4. Freethinkers like to be able to identify as such, too.
When we say we don't
worship supernatural
beings, we aren't
"judging", we are
saying how WE feel.

8. She's a 15 year old kid, remember?
At that age my T-shirts were
WAY more offensive!

:P

9. I wasn't crazy about the "bullshit" t-shirt either
I told her if she's going to wear it, expect confrontations.

12. Well, I think if you told her that, then that is fair.
She'll have to deal with it. And good on her if she can handle it.

Sounds like a strong young woman and I'm all for that.

10. I'm not threatened by anyone's beliefs either.
Their actions on behalf of those beliefs, though...that's an entirely different matter.
