how about a trick to cut back on smoking?
*disclaimer - this worked for me. it might not work for you. so no hate, ok?*

i smoke. i like smoking, but i smoke too much. i noticed that smoking for me is like eating potato chips. if a pack is there? i take one out and smoke it, and then the next one, etc...

a friend told me to put the cigarette pack in the kitchen. in a cupboard. and leave it there. if i want a smoke, then i walk out to the kitchen and get one. but just one. then i go back to where i was and smoke it. as many as i wanted, as often as i wanted, but i had to leave that pack in the kitchen cupboard.

ok. i tried it.

so whether i was working or watching a tv show or sitting on the can, it turned into a deliberate effort to go to that kitchen and get that smoke.

not a "FUCK! I HAVE NO MORE SMOKES IN THE HOUSE!!!" thing.

but a "fuuuccckkk... i gotta to walk all the way over there to get a smoke???, i'll wait for the next commercial... or for the end of this chapter..." thing.

i cut my smoking in half almost immediately. its a start.

ok, maybe i am just that lazy and that's why it works for me . or maybe it might help you too...

1. It might work for me
if I kept them further away. Like maybe next door. The kitchen cabinet is probably too close for me.

I might try that.

3. Whatever works, 1,
If standing on your head in the corner, whistling Dixie works, then it's a good thing.

4. Best trick I ever learned:
Keep a little notebook or just a piece of paper with your cigs, and every time you reach for one, write down the time. Almost immediately, you'll start thinking, "I just had one half an hour ago? Too soon." You might even start little competitions with yourself, seeing how long you can go without one because it looks better on the paper.

Anything that makes you think, "Do I really want this one?" is pretty effective. I cut back by about 20 percent when I started making my own cigs (as opposed to rolling them — I buy loose tobacco and filtered tubes and make 'em with an "injector," they call it) simply because I have to go through that effort.

5. One of the strangest tricks I ever heard I learned here on DU, and it works!
Keep a bottle of Frank's Original Hot Sauce handy. (It's hot, but not too bad.) Whenever you feel the craving for a smoke, take a swig of the hot sauce right out of the bottle!

Amazingly, this works, somehow. I'm guessing that it's some combination of satisfying an oral fixation and causing your throat to get that same "warmed-up" feeling you get from smoking.
