If a society lost the ability to read and write--as they did in EARTH ABIDES

(all those who could read and write died off, and the later generations didn't learn), could somebody later on be able to decode their writing?

1. Eventually.
Evolution doesn't stop. Some humans are pretty good at deciphering things. The brain makes connections between concepts and begins to decode. For some people, it's just natural to try. So, if they tried, eventually someone would and school would start all over again. Hopefully, they'd do it better next time and allow everyone to go to school from the get go.
