So who likes to decorate houses? (pics)
I went in to take measurements today. Here are a few pics. Any suggestions? Heh. I'm clueless. Carpets will be darkish beige.

kitchen/dinette/living room (appliances will be black)

go to www.HGTV.com

They have tons of pics of designer rooms. Find a style you like and copy at will.

Have fun!

5. Do you have any furniture you plan to use?
If you do, then paint the walls a complementary color. I find white walls cold and almost institutional, although some people seem to like them.

21. Here's one suggestion: Get to Restoration Hardware
and look at all the lovely but pricey paints.

If you don't want to pay those prices, take the paint chips you like, and get those colors at another store. A friend of mine did this, and all the colors are gorgeous and look great together. And her house has such a good "feeling" to it.

I would put fake wood blinds in the windows. Lowes and Home Depot have some great looking blinds at low prices. White blinds against the painted walls will look great. You can finish with fabric window treatments if you like.

33. Try their Silver Sage, or any other reasonable light sage green paint.
It's mellow and provides a good backdrop. If not sage, then a warm tam or a warmish grey (grey is the newest neutral). I finally got rid of my white walls and it makes an enormous difference.

Definitely simple white panel window treatments. (I have the ones from Ikea; cheap and stylish.) Basic white sofa and an armchair and ottoman from Ikea (I love mine; new white slipcovers cost $50; other color slipcovers are more, but they are available). Darker greenish area rug. Sofa pillows and maybe a throw afgan in colors picked up from framed prints on the wall with colors you like, including greens. Plants of varied green shades work well as accessories; also, a few other accessories (including a few candles) picking up a color or two from the sofa pillows/pictures. Keep it minimalist; not too much stuff. That's what in style and the rooms are smallish.

I watch lots and lots of decorating shows, including the ones that help homeowners that need to spruce up their place in a few days so they can sell. Hope this helps.

23. Paint!! Use 25% color of walls for the ceilings. Get rid of the white.
Choose one color--neutral--in pale yellow or green or blue and use it throughout. It will make your home seem larger because the eye won't stop moving from room to room.

24. Color color color!
And--oh yeah--color!

Don't be afraid of painting everything in sight--it's the best way to liven up a new house that's still "sterile"--and it's easy! (Why, yes, I do have a dozen paint buckets in my basement--how did you know? :P)

Also it's fun to pick up cool (all-wood!) furniture and knicknacks and lamps at flea markets and the not-too-snobby antique stores/co-ops. I recommend the Sunday morning flea market in Avon and the fairly inexpensive antique stores on 5&20. That way you can contrast the old with the new and, again, keep the house from being too sterile. And you'll also avoid the curse of being too "matchy matchy", like if you bought from furniture stores. Plus it's fun to hunt down bargains. Heck, it's even fun to go shopping for accessories at Target!

Let me know if you need any more location-specific recommendations! :hi:

40. Try Craig's list if you're willing to try used.
BTW, I got my basic Ikea "Ektorp" sofa and matching ottoman from Craig's List (with the owner delivering for a small additional charge) for a total of $165. It had red covers. I just tossed them out and then bought the white slipcovers for $50 and the ottoman cover for $19. Good as new. Only downside is it takes a few hours to iron and put the slipcovers on, but really, considering the price it's not bad at all.

45. I read right here on DU
that someone got a brand-new stainless steel fridge on Craigslist (the--apparently very wealthy--woman just didn't like it). We got our appliances from Hoffman's in Henrietta (or is it Brighton? on Winton Road S.), but they weren't cheap. They were fair, though, and better to deal with than Lowe's or some other big-box store.

I got the idea, when we moved into the house we live in now, to decorate the living room like a lodge or den. Comfortable, somewhat masculine, and casual. I was just about finished "decorating" when I saw a TV show about how to furnish a home & the woman on TV said, "I don't want my living room to look like somebody's den." LOL

Sorry I can't give you any good decorating advice.

Maybe a color that blends with the flooring, (maybe slightly darker than the floor) and the countertop, maybe an off white/beige for the kitchen, or a sage. The bedroom a darker beige, the bathroom something different than beige. Take a look here, it has lots of pics for inspiration....

47. I'm partial to vibrant colors.
My kitchen is pale yellow with Dark Blue under the chair rail, my family room is dark blue under the chair rail and light blue above with a burgundy accent wall and my living room is a deep sage green.

DR is white because I couldn't come up with anything to paint it, LOL. I know people say your DR should be red to stimulate appetites, but I'm not a fan of red.

I think if you have a piece of furniture that you really like you should base the colors off that.

House is beautiful, BTW.

What fun!!! Am excited for you! :hi:

Some advice:

Start collecting photos that appeal to you. Don't question why they appeal to you, just print'em out or tear from magazines.
Separate the photos into categories by room (kitchen, bath, living room, bedroom, etc.)
After you have a collection going, start taking note of what the colors are, and note the common factors...you'll surprise yourself!

Once placed in categories, start picking out features in the photos that you like, such as window treatments, fabrics, accessories, furniture, etc. This will help you define your style.

Check back on your choices and photos to make note of functionality of items either circled or Post-It notes attached (recommend use of sticky notes so you can add to or change out when you narrow down the choices, the why of what you are seeing, and any other items or features that you missed previously and find you like or don't like.)

And keep adding pics to your collection!

PM if you want input at any time!
(have degree in Interior Design)
