1. As an IT guy in the Navy, I've had occasion to help/assist in 2 of these cases...
...I wish like hell I could unsee some of the things I've seen. I don't envy you one bit, but I do sympathize greatly.

7. Yesterday, in our Pediatric Med class, we had a lecture on child abuse.
When I got home, I had to throw the lecture handout in the trash. The photos of the victims were just awful, and some of them were post-mortem...

A little piece of me died inside...

23. He's been in since 1992 when he was 18.
He hasn't been prescribed any medicine of any type since 1998.

He was originally found Not Responsible (New York's insanity defense) and was in a forensic hospital until 1998. He was then transferred to a state civil hospital.

He could not be described as clinically ill or symptomatic for ten years yet the state Office of Mental Health petitioned every two years like clockwork to retain him, primarily because of the original charges.

Finally, a judge acted like a judge and found OMH had not met its burden warranting a further restriction of his liberty. And that, only after an independent psychiatrist and the hospital's own treating psycholgist testified on his behalf.

These cases are made much harder for everyone involved because of the histrionics surrounding them.

19. We're dealing with allegations that a popular karate teacher touched kids inappropriately
here in Wilmington, NC. Yet, no one can believe this guy did it because 1. he's God-fearing; 2. he always helps his neighbors; 3. he is a 'salt of the earth' type of guy, etc. etc.

I commented on our local news website that it is precisely those people in such positions of authority and trust who are so good at appearing one way in public and another way in private, thus successfully being able to get away with anything they wish on their prey.

I was actually disgusted by the number of comments of people who know can't believe this guy could be a molester.

24. People want to believe they can correctly judge a person's character
I think it makes people feel powerless when stuff like this happens which is why they prefer to not believe it.

Unfortunately many people don't realize how charismatic and manipulative predators like this can be. After all, you're not going to get away with hurting children if you look and act like "Chester molester".

26. Usually that's true, but one case I had was the exception.
The defendant lived in a trailer park where the other residents literally called him "Chester the Molester." Of course no one ever bothered to drop a dime on him.

25. It is always a shock to those around the offender...
...specifically because of what you mentioned. And sorry to mention it, but every single child molester I have prosecuted has been a devote Christian or at least said he was and acted like one. This case involves a clergyman. The last one I did, the victim disclosed to a clergyman who declined to get involved. Neither of these clerics was a Roman Catholic priest, FYI.

29. They always land on your desk because
governmental law offices are subject to at least one of the immutable laws of bureaucracy - "do a job twice, and it's yours." Apparently, you have handled several of these, and done well. Congratulations - you now own the portfolio.

How do I know this? I managed to collect a couple of equally distasteful portfolios some years ago, for the same reason, albeit on the federal level.

How do you get out of this duty? In my experience, in one of only two ways - you either leave, or you stay and get promoted far enough that you can detail that work to others.

Good luck.

30. Well, I'm not getting promoted because the only position above me is the elected DA.
It's a small county. I get all of the cases in this county because I'm the guy who prosecutes appeals. What I really was wondering is why this county has so many.

31. I used to work for CPS when I got out of grad school, so you have my
sympathy, and my thanks. For some reason, I still feel hopeful - not sure how that happened! :)

I used to have to present in Juvenile Court when I worked there and it was really hard. I felt bad for the kids, the judges, the parents. What a mess, but it has to be done.

It is weird how often society is often in denial about these folks, though.

32. Oh, I see. My guess then, based purely upon anecdotal evidence
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 05:16 PM by Moondog
is that your county has no more than anyplace else; but, due to public education and consciousness raising efforts, these kinds of offenses are being reported more often than used to be the case.

Based purely upon news reports, there is a lot more of this showing up and being prosecuted now where I live (Florida) as well. I've heard as much from old friends in the same line of work who are located in other jurisdictions, too.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. It's not just you, and it's not just your county.

...when I do legal research on previous cases of this kind, this specific county's name as well as this appellate district generally come up an awful lot. :(
