You don't see ducks & chickens fighting each other in cartoons. Foxes & wolves don't constantly harangue each other in the forest. So why all the social pressure on cats and dogs to fight? In my experience, they get along pretty good. Isn't this just enforced bigotry?

1. I read (or heard) that it's because cats have a strong "flight" instinct and dogs....
have a strong "chase" instinct. If the cat runs, the dog will chase it. In my experience, my dogs and cats always got along just fine, because the cat was comfortable being around dogs.

As to horses and cows, they are both herd animals and pose no threat to each other, so they hang out together.

Don't know about wolves and foxes... Maybe they just have good "social skills" and don't provoke each other?

2. Horses and cattle don't get along all that well and should not be kept together
without good supervision. Horses will bite, kick, and chase cattle. Occasionally in close confinement horned cattle will hook a horse.

I believe wolves might eat foxes, but I'm not sure - coyotes will sure eat small dogs.

Did Daffy and Foghorn ever co-star? I can't remember.

3. Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumley the Walrus should be a lesson to us all
In nature, Chumley should be eating Tennessee, but through understanding and tolerance, they became best pals
Until that deleted episode where Chumley snapped...

5. Horses and cattle are prey animals. They stick together.
We (or I should say "I" now that my husband has left me . . . ) have dogs and cats and llamas and goats. The llamas and goats find safety in numbers because they, like horses and cattle, are prey animals. I can introduce a new camelid or caprine to the barnyard and there's general acceptance. Dogs and cats, being carnivores, are much more in competition for the food.
