Is this unreasonable or am I the unreasonable one?

I live in a completely residential neighborhood. Someone around a half mile away decided to hold a fundraiser today (still residential neighborhood) by having bands come and play loud amplified music for 11 hours today - 12pm-11pm. I have pretty good earplugs in (bought them because of someone redoing their house on the street and I was tired of the construction noise, and these block that noise completely so I'm shocked I can hear this) and I can still hear it. The people next door must be deaf from it. Do you think I am unreasonable to be upset by this? I want to put in a complaint to the town on Monday when the office opens. My father (live with my parents while finishing college) already called the mayor's HOUSE because he's so annoyed but he's out of town on business.

So, do you think I am the unreasonable one, or are the people who decided to host such a long, loud fundraiser in their backyard in a residential neighboorhood the unreasonable ones? keep in mind the town has plenty of appropriate facilities that the public can use for these types of events - several parks among other things.

On the other hand if they have a permit then there's much you can do regardless of where it's at.

I'm putting in a complaint to the town on Monday when the office opens. No idea if they have a permit, because the police are useless and won't say anything, won't tell me what the decibal limit is, admit there is a noise code but refuse to say what it says or if it's being followed, and I can't speak to anyone else until Monday.

I would think there's some safety issue honestly - if I can hear it this loud this far away surely the sound levels would be dangerous for the neighbors?

I've already emailed the sponsors (local businesses) and informed them they will not be getting my business anymore if they participate in something like this in a residential neighboor.

If they do have a permit I'm certainly going to make it known to them that I don't think they should give permits for this sort of thing in this sort of area and I hope enough of the people in this area complain as well so that policy is changed.

I don't feel that negates the nastiness/rudeness of the person running it
I called to complain and she basically said "It's for charity so I am gonna do whatever I want, I don't care if it annoys other people, and I don't even think you have a right to be annoyed because it's CHARITY DID YOU HEAR ME ITS A FUNDRAISER"

I kinda like the idea of driving past their house with the windows open and my stereo blasting at some time they would like quiet or sleep. But I don't want to get caught. :(

I think I'm just going to go complain to town officials since I think it's ridiculous they allowed an event of that length/noise level in a location like that. The idiots running it want to do it again too! UGH. I just do not understand the thought process that allows one to think "Hey, it's ok to run this loud, long a fundraiser in the backyard in a 100% residential area that is known for being particularly quiet." (this is an area that gets maybe ONE party a year that might have music going for an hour, if that)

UM NOT THE MOST APPROPRIATE PLACE/TIME for such an event!

I doubt they had a permit — at least, one that included music that loud for that long in a residential area. Getting permits for a public assembly isn't that easy; it ain't a freakin' garage sale. And when you tack on loud, live music... well, it just doesn't wash in the red-tape cycle.

I'm guessing this was some kinda thing for someone in hospital who can't swing the cost, and these people went ahead and did this without any authorization except "It's for CHARITY!"

I tried to talk to the police about it and they were very uncooperative. They refused to say what kind of noise limits there are (there has to be some kind of limit even during the day, or you could basically purposely torture a neighbor you hate by constantly playing deafening music in the backyard all day). I basically felt they were ignoring it because it was a charity. That's why I am going to try talking to town officials who can at least show me the freaking law codes. (not available online for us cause a small town!) and if someone really DID authorize a permit for it I can protest the brain dead idiot who allowed it and show my displeasure at this being allowed, in hopes other people have complained as well and they won't be idiots about this in the future. Either way I will certainly be showing my elected officials my displeasure at an entire day ruined by this and how useless the police were.

(I was forced to go out while sick because the noise was unbearable. I'm pretty sure I must have gotten dirty looks walking around the mall and eating out with this cough, but my doctor is certain I'm not contagious at this point so whatever, I'm not listening to that noise torture all day)

Temporary alcohol sale permits are NOT easy to get — y'gotta go through the ABC, and they ain't Miss Congeniality, in my experience. And, if I remember correctly, they require you to have liability insurance, and I think the permit alone costs something like $250, at least in Kollyforniya.

'Course, I haven't done stuff like this in almost 20 years, so I may be a bit off. And the procedure might be more lax where you live.

Still, this all smells really funny.
