Is there a rule of thumb for how much taxes are going to run for a stay in a motel/hotel?

1. Probably the local rate.
So it depends on state, county and city.

2. cities and states really hit the tourist with taxes
I remember $50 stated rates costing over $60. Thank goodness I don't travel much any more.

4. Really depends on the city...
They have crazy taxes for everything... sometimes it's even seasonal, I hear. It seems the towns with baseball Spring Training add taxes to hotels and rental cars during the pre-season, then they go back to "normal" the rest of the year.

5. My wholly unscientific rule-of-thumb: assume 15% but be prepared for 20%
In some locations once you add up all of the add on fees it's darn close to twenty percent. In other areas it may be less than 10%. I budget for the worst case to avoid high cost surprises.

FYI, a lot of web reservation sites include reference to the local lodging tax rates.
