Poll question: Whom do you pick to win the Stanley Cup?
I have the top four teams from the Western Conference listed, followed by the top five from the East; the Senators and Maple Leafs are tied for fourth in the East.

By my calculation, the Penguins, Capitals, and Blue Jackets are out of the playoff picture. Of couerse, there's hardly any money in Washington, so they can't build any teams there.

Here are the NHL Standings.

1. Colorado Avalanche.
They're be too tough to beat...as they have been in years past. I see Sakic getting his team another win this year.

7. A Flyers/Avalanche Stanley Cup finals game...
would kick-ass.

Are you saying the Aves are like the NYY of the NHL?

14. this year yeah
and flyers/avs would be a series I just wouldn't watch. I'm not saying they are the Yankees of the NHL, but they certainly are trying to buy a cup this year.

Avs :puke:
Flyers :puke:

You're kidding, right?

As soon as Lang gets healthy, I see a tidal wave coming for the Red Wings' opponents.

Or could it be an Avalanche?

5. Odds are a 'Former Capital' will win
Two play for Colorado, one in Ottawa, one in Detroit, two in Boston, one in Toronto, two in Montreal (from a trade a couple of years ago), one in Buffalo, one in LA (the latter two still have to make the playoffs)

Lol, sad but true.

Who is going to stop them if they are healthy in the playoffs?

11. Sens... this is their year, finally.
The Wings seem like an easy pick, but they're still too old and tired to survive any lengthy playoff series. Same problem as last year.

13. last year was the fluke of Giggy
The avs are the easy pick, they've picked up a shitload of talent.

Alfredo sauce's prediction won't survive, the Sens have a hard road to run to even get to the finals. Nice to see competitive hockey in the east again though

16. Right, but..
the "fluke" of Gigiuere exposed a serious, fatal flaw in Detroit's ability to compete in a long, physical series.. even if they had won the series against Anaheim, they most likely would have been dispatched pretty easily in round 2.

17. long series?
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 05:57 PM by youngred
they were swept out. That doesn't make sense. Look at the year before when everyone was saying the same thing you are now about them (before they ditched a lot of their old players), they played a set of long series and they had the olympics in which more than half of their players participated while everyone else had the majority of their team resting and still managed to capture the cup. Everyone focuses on the big veteran names, but for every chelios there is a Zetterberg, or Datsyuk. They are on average a fairly young team.

19. Yes, they were swept, but..
IIRC, 2 of the games were double overtime, thus equating to almost a 6 game series..

20. I still disagree though
No offense or anything, but Detroit is an offensive minded team (though they have an incredible D) and the fact that they couldn't muster hardly anything in terms of offense is a testament to the play of the Ducks and Giggy, but ANY team in the league should be able to gather enough strength to play a 6 game series, or even one with double OT (though that's only 1 1/3 games not 2 full games like you said).

23. I hear that..
My wife knows she's not to schedule any tv time for herself for the next couple months..playoffs take precedent over CSI, Charmed, etc....and, I can't imagine the league will fold altogeher.. but there may be some big, big changes.

24. there will def be changes
they have to cut down on ticket costs, figure out a way to get better exposure (don't get me started on Bettman), no more expansion, cut player salaries and owner profits. A lockout/strike would be simply disastrous for the league.

The Leafs and Bruins I can tolerate having it. Beyond that, forget it. AFAIC, they're all "expansion teams" and undeserving of Lord Stanley's prize.
