3. You think that is bad??
Wait till you get to the tenses!

Zwölf is a hard one because of the umlaut. Getting that down is really hard and you feel pretty silly cause you feel like your trying to do an Inspector Clouseau impersonation. Get a cd if you don't already have one. Good luck!

say "tzvelf" and then say "tzvolf".

Then try to say it with the vowel about halfway between the two.

8. I've got it
down. Umlauts were the hardest thing for me to learn because we don't have anything like it in English. Ich and similar unfamiliar sounds really kicked my ass too but after 7 years I can pass for a native sometimes.

7. Language development between the ear and the brain is interesting.
When learning language brains group sounds to the nearest sound that has a purpose, then anything close to that sound gets heard in the mind as that sound.

So depending what language you learn as a child, there are groups of sounds your mind literally does not hear, because they get pushed into the most used sound with meaning near that sound.

It is an effective way for language to be quickly understood based on many different ways people speak, but it makes it difficult for someone to learn a new sound they never grew up hearing.
