4. Jennifer M. Granholm, baby!
5. Very much so
6. YYYYYYYYYYYYES

6. Questions again? Dammit!
1. Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton. That means he got to eat his soul or something. So he was Aaron Burr AND Alexander Hamilton. That's badass.

2. Well, I know there are at least 3 former Wisconsin governors still kicking; and I believe Dick Celeste is still alive in Ohio. I think Jim Rhodes is dead, that dude's gotta be older than God if he's not.

3. I have no damn clue.

4. Jim Doyle.

5. Not particularly, but he's not up for reelection till '06, so he may still prove a tough challenge for the pukes to topple.

6. I like him a lot more now than I did when he took office. He's shown courage I didn't think he had.

7. No.

8. Brother John Sinclair.

President Sarah? (Nope, I don't have a penis, so my name wouldn't be considered in this country.)

8. A Connecticut Yankee's answers
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 10:53 PM by NightTrain
1. Who was your favorite Vice President?

I guess Al Gore.

2. How many of your former governors are alive?*

Two that I know of: Bill O'Neill and Lowell Weicker.

3. How many former US Senators from your state are still alive?*

I'm not sure. However, Lowell Weicker was a senator until 1988, when he lost to Joseph Lieberman due to a sleazy smear campaign. Weicker was elected governor of Connecticut in 1990.

4. Who is your current Governor?

John G. Rowland--but hopefully, not for much longer!

5. Is your Governor popular?*

Not anymore! He's currently under investigation for corruption and may face impeachment! We can only hope....

6. Do you approve of your current Governor and what (s)he has done?

Let me put it this way:

When he ran for governor in 1994, Rowland promised to eliminate the state income tax. Ten years later, he has not. Once he became governor, Rowland rescinded a promised pay raise to Connecticut's state employees. He also has done everything in his power to alienate the various unions with which the governor's office routinely deals (teachers, state workers, etc.).

The only real beneficiaries of the Rowland Administration have been the likes of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, not to mention Enron, which lost something like $44 million of the state's money when the company collapsed.

So I guess I don't approve of the job Rowland has done as governor!

7. Has anyone with your first name become President?*

No, but Howard Dean's last name is also my first name. Does that count?

9. hoo boy,
1) You mean in my lifetime? Gore, no doubt.

2) I think two, Richard Celeste and George Voinovich, unless you count that Nancy Hollister 10-day interim thing, in which case three.

3) Hmmm... Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn are both still alive, I don't remember any farther back.

4) Bob Taft

5) His popularity seems to be slipping, if it ever existed - his dem opponent candidates were both seriously weak, so he may have cruised into office solely based on his (R).

6) I hate the motherfucker - putting the screws to the economy, driving jobs and young people out of state, bringing I.D. into the science curriculum, banning partner benefits for gays... uurrrgh!

7) Yes, a horrible one. My name's Ron.

8) Thomas Payne, hands down. THAT was a brilliant, uncompromisingly principled man. It's kind of like calling Ghandi your hero - it's not that you could ever possibly live up to such accomplishments, but you can admire the hell out of him and at least strive in your own way to honor that person by trying your absolute best to be the same KIND of person as best you can. In fact, if that DU username weren't already taken, I'd be using it myself.

11. Here's mine.
1) Al Gore, hands down.

2) I have only been in New Jersey for a decade but I think we have Brendon Byrne, Thomas Keane, Christie Shitman (bleech!) and of course Jim McGreevy (current).

3) Um, I can only think of Bill Bradley, Torecelli, the incomparable Frank Lautenberg (current) and John Corzine.

4) McGreevy.

5,6) McGreevy, I think is in trouble. I'm not crazy about him myself, but I will vote for him anyway since he's the Democrat and I could never imagine myself voting Republican. The Republicans here, as almost everywhere, are detestible rapacious hypocritical creeps. It almost goes without saying that in New Jersey many politicians, though, and one would have to include McGreevy here, have questionable ethics.

7) I wish my congressman, the marvelous Rush Holt, were in higher office. He's my political ideal, a kind caring, ethical, thoughtful, courageous man, a scientist (former Assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory). He is the author of the important HR2239, the bill against black box voting. I am a huge admirer still of Al Gore and Howard Dean. Last, but certainly not least, I am very proud of our nominee designate, John Kerry.

18. Here goes
For Americans:

1. Who was your favorite Vice President?
Spiro Agnew. The Greeks are representin'. OK, just kidding. I ma 27 so I haven't lived through many. I guess Gore would be the one.

2. How many of your former governors are alive?*
1 that I know of. That's Cuomo.

3. How many former US Senators from your state are still alive?*
One that I know of. Damato

4. Who is your current Governor?
Pataki

5. Is your Governor popular?*
Yes very. Reelected like 3 times. Got 60% last time in a Dem state. They ran some loser against him.

6. Do you approve of your current Governor and what (s)he has done?
Generally yes. I am for the cigarette tax and he has stayed out of my way. I have no reason to dislike him on the state level. There is some talk of corruption but I haven't seen any hard proof.

7. Has anyone with your first name become President?*
Harry Truman

and finally...

8. Who is your biggest role model from the world of politics?
That's tough. John McCain maybe. It's not about politics. It's about integrity. He is a stand up guy who fights for what he believes in. He is not scared of fighting the pukes and I am very sympathetic to him for what happened when he ran against Bushco.

21. There's also James Buckley (Senate) and Hugh Carey (Governor)
Buckley defeated one of my heroes, Charles Goodell, a Republican who Rockefeller appointed after the assassination of RFK. Goodell turned liberal because that's what he figured the electorate wanted when they voted for Kennedy. So when Goodell ran for re-election, the Republicans supported the Conservative candidate. Buckley is the brother of William F.

20. As an Australian
1. Who was your favourite Australian Prime Minister?

Edward Gough Whitlam –his interlude in office was before my time but his achievements and legacy have impacted and transformed the political and social landscape to such an extent that they are still very much evident almost 30 years after his departure from office

Edward Gough Whitlam was the first Labor Prime Minister of Australia in 23 years. His achievements are too great for me to list here but some of them are included in these two biographies below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gough_Whitlam

http://whitlam.alp.org.au/bio.html

Unfortunately the fact that Whitlam was the first Labor Prime Minister in 23 years and the fact that most of his cabinet ministers had never experienced government before ensured that the Whitlam government made a significant number of missteps and errors that later Labor governments learned from. In addition the conservative establishment never really accepted his victory and undermined his government from the start –culminating in his dramatic and spectacular downfall from power in 1975. Nevertheless he still remains a hero to many of those on the progressive side here in Australia and this nation is IMO a lot better for having had him

2. How many of your former premiers are alive?*

Tom Lewis, Neville Wran, Barrie Unsworth, Nick Greiner and John Fahey -that makes 5

3. Who is your current Premier?
Bob Carr-Australian Labor Party

4. Is your Premier popular?*
He’s been in power for almost ten years now and he has won three elections so, yes, he has been very popular for most of his time in power and one of his main successes is that he has held a high following among voters who would normally vote conservative. A considerable number of my friends who vote conservative at the federal level have told me that they have always voted for him at the state level and profoundly admire and respect him. His popularity is diminishing now, though, due to some problems with the train services and also with health services in New South Wales. He will also be disadvantaged if Labor comes to power on the national scene this year –a distinct possibility-because traditionally voters dislike having a state leader and a federal leader of the same political organization in power and voters will also use federal elections to register protest votes against state governments and vice versa

5. Do you approve of your current Premier and what (s)he has done?

Yes, I think he’s been a good Premier, but I also think he has been very arrogant in some policy areas and complacent in others. He sometimes has a tendency to come off as smug and condescending and this annoys me to no end. He could have done a better job with the railways and hospital services but he also did quite a good job with the Sydney Olympics. He’s also slightly too right wing for me but I nevertheless prefer him to the conservatives.

6. Has anyone with your first name become Prime Minister?*
Nope

7. Who is your biggest role model from the world of politics?

Gough Whitlam, JFK, RFK or Martin Luther King. Gandhi ranks above them all
