Why Don't Men Wear Cool Hats Anymore?
I love watching old movies. All the men wore hats. Now we wear ballcaps. Men and women. Brim in the front, brim in the rear, brim to the side.

It's time the fedora makes a comeback.

5. I wear a cap when I'm in a suit. I've got several including a few leather ones.
My wife likes when it is slightly cocked to one side and lowered over the eye just a bit.

The black leather cap goes very well with my black leather vest - with a nice tie, of course.

You just can't get a 3 piece suit anymore so you have to improvise.

At least real men. So if you wear a hat your hair is messed up all day.

11. I wish I'd lived in the days....
when women wore utterly useless, extravagant hats.

People need an article of clothing that exists purely for show, so we can get koo-koo creative with it.

12. For me hats are functional: they keep my head warm or dry,
or are good to hide hair that needs a wash. Other than that I have no use for them because I sweat profusely from the head and when I wear a hot I get very warm.

20. I'll buy one if you buy one!
My kids gave me a summer fedora for Father's Day. I must admit, I always thought that I looked dorky in a hat...but this one looks pretty snazzy. Truth is, though, the entire wardrobe ensemble needs to be in order. The hat is like the tree-top ornament on a Christmas tree!

19. JFK pretty much put it
to the hat industry in 1961, at his inauguration. There was much fuss about whether or not he'd wear the traditional - up until then - top hat and JFK, true to form, and so very proud of that cool head of hair (especially next to Ike) - carried his top hat.

That did it.

But, with the John Dillinger movie opening next month, and Johnny Depp looking cooler than hell in a fedora, I wouldn't be surprised to see hats make a comeback, even if only for a while.

I just hope they don't turn into a latter-day baseball cap thing, because, honestly, a man in a baseball cap, if he's not in or at a game, simply causes my eyes to glaze over.

Keep in mind the difference between a hat and a cap. It matters.

And men are supposed to doff their chapeaux when they're in an elevator with a lady present, a lovely old tradition that got lost when the baseball-cap-wearing barbarians took to the streets, honestly believing the caps made them look like they had hair.........................

28. I have 20 or so hats and always wear at least one of them...
the Indiana Jones and straw fedoras get the most comments, but lots of people like the Panama. The newsboys and Greek fisherman's hats don't get much comment, but are comfortable.

The huge Russian-looking rabbit fur thing that's probably a woman's hat but I don't care, seems to be appreciated the most, but it wasn't cold enough to wear most of last winter.

Then there are the ones I won't wear, like the huge pink sombrero I won at at a cookoff, and anything even closely resembling a baseball cap that found its way here.

Not necessarily the same colors, but these are the styles I prefer.

Don't really care for baseball caps anylonger. Not sure why though.

34. I have lots of hats. And wear some of them.
I've shaved my head for several years, because what's left of my hair isn't worth fooling with. But when I had hair, it was blonde; I'm pretty fair-skinned and have blue eyes. And I live in FL for much of the year. So I have hats because 2d degree sunburns on top of one's head are not fun. As it is I see a dermatologist a couple times a year to do periodic maintenance on my sun-damaged derm. So when I'm in FL and going outside for more than a few minutes, I generally wear Panamas, or a booney hat. Up north, in cold weather, I generally wear traditional hard felt fedoras when it rains, sleets or snows. I have some newsboys, but once you're past 35 or so, they look pretty twee, so I haven't worn them in some years. I also have the usual styles of Russian fur hats, which were gifts, but I don't ever wear them.

I'd like to find a good quality Homburg, just for grins.

There's no place to hang a fedora. A ball cap you can crumple up and stick in your pocket.

Also, closets have gotten smaller - there's no place for hat boxes.

I even have a bowler, although it got messed up in a rainstorm and needs to be reblocked. I do think dressy hats are coming back, at least in some circles, but I doubt they'll ever be fully embraced again by the mainstream, any more than wearing a full suit will be.

46. I wear fedoras. I have fur felt fedoras in black brown, grey and white
I have a bunch of Stetson fedoras and a couple of Largomasino fedoras, the "Stetson" of Argentina. I also have a few straw fedoras and panama hats. I started wearing hats when the medications I have to take made me sensitive to the sun in the summer and the blood thinners made me feel the cold in ways I never expected.

good hats are not cheap but fortunately my wife likes the way I look in these hats and has been foolish enough to purchase a couple of the more expensive ones for me.

here's a forum for hats - The Fedora Lounge, http://www.thefedoralounge.com/index.php?s=d65eec9ed1dae7ede17044ce48f757f8
