7. I don't have any, but it's a perfect blend of man and nature.
Honest to goodness family farms, dairy, vegetables and vineyards mixed with small towns full of Victorian , Italianate and Craftsman houses. The area used to have money, but now has been facing hard times for 30 years or so.

13. "Perfect blend of man and nature"...I totally agree. New York State
seems to have figured out how to pull that off in at least one other region I've visited - the Adirondacks. I love the small hamlets that are sprinkled throughout the park in such an unobtrusive way.

16. At the southern end of Canandaigua Lake there is a big controversy over
windmills being installed on the ridges. They do tower over the landscape, but I think people won't even notice them in a few years, just as we generally don't notice the electric wires strung along our roads. And to be fair, I think windmills over the Finger Lakes are better than mountain top removal in West Virginia. Unless people are willing to give up electricity, that seems the better choice.

19. They can be quite picturesque if looked at in the right way
People worry about the noise, but there are plenty of areas that are "uninhabited" where the whooshing noise wouldn't bother anyone.

As long as they don't disturb Spook Hill! :D http://rocwiki.org/Spook_Hill

2. Yup
It is a beautiful area. But we do have sucky weather at times. All that green takes a ton of water.

3. Why thank you!
We like it here. It's lush this time of year, which is nice, but it's truly breathtaking in the fall--you should come back through in October. Winter is another story--lovely, but bring the studded snow tires! :hi:

5. My husband and I drove through last winter on the way back from southern Ohio -
normally we would have gone up along the Thruway (I-90), but there was too much snow up there. Sure enough, we hit a squall about 3 miles from our house.

my daughter has started a Facebook group - "We're from Fulton, we laugh at your snow!"

9. There was just "something" about it that threw me.
It is very beuatiful, and to my midwestern eyes it is very similar to what I've seen my whole life--with all the small farms and what have you.

But it had a very distinct feel to it, it is NOT midwestern. I loved my trip to Ithaca, but the whole Almost-familiar-but-really-totally-different-vibe feeling never went away.

Plus I got to go to Rochester and do some playboating at the Erie Canal Lock 32 whitewater park--that was pretty cool too.

15. The nice thing about the lake country is that even though there are some millionaires in the area,
there are a lot of middleclass people able to enjoy the area as well.

17. Just not lakeside (anymore)
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 10:40 AM by MorningGlow
Twelve years ago, we bought a lakeside house that was a shambles for mere pennies. We fixed it up, lived in it for five years, sold it for a modest profit. Two years ago the husband died and his widow put the house on the market...for nearly double the price they bought it for (nearly three times what we paid in '97). Bet she got her asking price, too.

Of course, if anyone has a lakeside cottage that's been in the family for decades, they're sitting on a goldmine.

On edit: and they did NOTHING to the house--it was in exactly the same shape as when we sold it to them, except they painted the outside a really garish deep blue.

23. I have relatives in Skaneatelas
My uncle used to have a huge 1860 house right at the head of the lake. Its a great place to go sailing, my cousin has a vintage Lightning and used to race Lasers.
The rolling hills and open sky are beautiful.

25. We use rumors of winter to keep the place from getting overcrowded.
In truth, winter can arrive any time from Nov 1 to Dec 31 and leaves any time from March 1 to April 1 (although there was that year it snowed on Mother's day...)The rest of the time it's wonderful - shirt sleeves or jacket weather.

28. You mean "Lake effect"?

"Lake affect" is what happens to us after 90 days of snow. It leads to people wearing shorts and sandals when the thermometer hits 50 degrees.

29. You know how much I hate effect and affect
I am pretty sure effect is the noun and affect is the verb. Beyond that it's still a challenge at times.
